Hardly a day goes by without a new Republican crime story and today is no different. The Asheville Citizen Times reports Rep. Madison Cawthorn has been charged with driving with a revoked license.
There is no indication why Cawthorn was pulled over by North Carolina Highway Patrol on March 3, but he faces recent additional citations for speeding. On Oct. 18 he was pulled over in Buncombe County and cited for doing 89 mph in a 65 mph zone, something that is considered reckless driving in many states. He was cited by the Highway Patrol again on Jan. 8 in Polk County for driving 87 mph in a 70 mph zone.
This isn’t the first, second, or even third time Cawthorn has shown blatant disrespect for the laws of North Carolina. In 2017, Cawthorn was charged with driving with a revoked license, although that case was later dismissed.
In 2014, Cawthorn was in a serious car accident after his friend, Bradley Ledford, dozed off during a late night drive from Florida. Cawthorn was asleep at the time of impact, but admitted that before the accident, the pair had switched seats while driving down the highway.
Cawthorn has been accused repeatedly of telling falsehoods about the accident, including that it was the reason his plans to attend the U.S. Naval Academy had been derailed. Records show he was rejected before the accident.
And Cawthorn isn’t the only Republican facing fresh charges today. Mesa County Elections Clerk Tina Peters was indicted in Colorado for conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation and attempting to influence a public servant. The case stems from her attempts to tamper with Dominion voting machines in Colorado.
