Whether presidential hopeful Gov. Ron “Don’t Say Gay” DeSantis is aware that there have been 15 times LGBTQ+ characters have been featured in Disney movies and TV shows (or 16 according to this article) is impossible to know. What he must know is that Disney employs some tens-of-thousands of people in Florida and their theme parks are a ginormous tourist attraction.
DeSantis is trying to demonize Disney and fight the culture war against this beloved American institution.
Is he going to try to convince the the culture warrior parents of Florida (and if he runs for president those in the entire country) not to let their children watch Disney movies and shows, and to throw away their Disney Princess dolls:
Lotsa luck with that.
We now see that DeSantis is not backing down and retreating from his attack on Disney and is doubling down:
I suspect that having realized that he made a mistake instead of backing down, in true Trumpian fashion he has escalated his attack to pander to his hard-core base. What he doesn’t take into account is that whether parents are Republican or Democrat their children are likely to love Disney. In fact, most adult Republicans grew up watching Disney and may have enjoyed family vacations at a Disney park.
An exception in politics may be Lauren Boebert who isn’t old enough to have heard the theme song while watching the original Mickey Mouse Club show aired intermittently from 1955 to 1996, but the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse aired from May 5, 2006, to November 6, 2016.
Of course she may never have taken her spawn to a Disney park because of the following:
Guests are not permitted to have firearms, ammunition, knives or weapons of any kind at or in Disney Resort Hotels and Disney Vacation Club Resorts, including in hotel rooms, units, vacation home villas and general public areas within the hotels and resorts. Reference
How can anyone with half a functional frontal cortex not know how to spell Mickey. Oh, asked and answered.
This tweet generated a lot of mockery:
