The AR 15 was used at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School in Parkland, Florida and at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas and at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. Bill Cassidy thinks the need to kill feral pigs which he believes can only be successfully accomplished using military style weapons like the AR 15 is more important than saving the lives of young students and Americans generally. It is designed to "kill people quickly and in large numbers". Feral pigs aren't a huge problem in America. Other nations also face mental health challenges and violent television programs and violent video games ... , but the United States alone has the massive amount of gun deaths every year. The problem in the United States primarily is the guns. If the problem primarily was mental health issues, then every advanced nation on Earth would have the same level of gun deaths. There is a marked difference between when we had the assault weapons ban in place and when it expired.

Even Republican, Representative Adam Kinzinger who served in the military, is open to a ban on the AR-15.

The weapon used to carry out the mass shooting in Uvalde on Tuesday is one all too familiar to Americans and lawmakers who have witnessed mass shootings occur over the past decade.
The Uvalde gunman used an AR-15-style rifle, a popular range of semiautomatic weapons that was purchased from a sporting goods store, to carry out the attack, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and law enforcement officials said Wednesday.
In 1994, President Bill Clinton signed an assault-weapons ban, which banned the AR-15 and other similar semiautomatic rifles.
After its ban, mass shootings were down in the decade that followed, in comparison to the decade before (1984-94) and the one after (2004-14), NPR reported in 2018.
The AR-15, like its military version, is designed to kill people quickly and in large numbers, hence the term assault-style rifle, gun control advocates told NPR in 2018. They say it has no valid recreational use, and civilians should not be allowed to own them.

The bullets fired by an AR-15 are different: They travel at a higher velocity and are far more lethal than routine bullets fired from a handgun. The damage they cause is a function of the energy they impart as they pass through the body. A typical AR-15 bullet leaves the barrel traveling almost three times faster than—and imparting more than three times the energy of—a typical 9mm bullet from a handgun. An AR-15 rifle outfitted with a magazine with 50 rounds allows many more lethal bullets to be delivered quickly without reloading.

Gun deaths are NEVER the result of the weapons used and can't possibly be solved by banning assault weapons. It's bad enough to hear that from Republicans, but to read it here on Daily Kos is more than a little disappointing. It doesn't matter if you point out in how many school shootings it has been used or the difference in gun deaths between the time with the assault weapons ban and without it and the difference in gun deaths in other advanced nations and the United States despite sharing the other supposed actual real causes of gun deaths, there are people who care more about the right to own an AR-15 than about anything else. You want to address other things as well, fine. Try to ban video games with military style weapons. But you need to address military style weapons .

The things to keep in mind is the accuracy of the AR 15 from relatively long distances unlike handgun s (400 yards+) and it can be fired 60 rounds per minute (semi-automatic , with each pull of the trigger - how quickly a person can pull the trigger is the realistic limit ) and then add in large capacity magazines which means you don't have to reload as often (time to reload can be the time a person/ student needs to get to safety). When you put this all together, then it is apparent why the AR 15 is so dangerous and why it needs to be banned. It makes killing a large number of people from distance relatively easy.
