Maybe the next time God sends the world a killer plague during a Republican administration—and then summons an ancient symbol of putrescence and death to alight on a pale messenger’s head in the midst of a vice presidential debate—we’ll get the hint that She doesn’t want our reproductive rights stripped away after all.
If anything, the Bible teaches that fetuses aren’t full persons, and yet the same people who’ve ridiculed SCOTUS’ original Roe decision as an overreach—based on the fact that abortion isn’t explicitly mentioned in the Constitution—have no good answer when you remind them it’s not explicitly condemned in the Bible either.
So here we are—floundering in a theocratic quicksand that only promises to get worse. And worse it will get unless we get off our arses and end the GOP once and for all.
How much worse? Well, how about a nationwide abortion ban? Will that finally put the lie to the pernicious “Democrats and Republicans are all alike” myth?
As Republicans across the United States are celebrating the Supreme Court decision Friday to overturn the fundamental right to an abortion established in Roe v. Wade, former vice president Mike Pence is calling for a national ban on the procedure, while former president Donald Trump argued the court’s decision is “something that will work out for everybody.”
Is that Trump’s full quote, or did they snip it before he said it will “work out for everybody with an abortion doctor on retainer in St. Barts?”
In an interview with Breitbart News, Pence said that the Supreme Court voting 6 to 3 to uphold a restrictive Mississippi law banning almost all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy “has given the American people a new beginning for life, and I commend the justices in the majority for having the courage of their convictions.”
After saying that “life won” on Friday, Pence, who is considered a potential GOP contender in the 2024 presidential election, went one step further by arguing the court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health should lead to a national ban on abortion.
Look, the chance of Mike Pence becoming president was already about the same as my chance of becoming pope. But it’s clear you don’t need a Dominionist asshole in the White House to oppress millions of people. You just need a regular asshole with no principles, conscience, or shame.
If there’s any silver lining to today’s news, it’s that this is bound to galvanize progressives—and maybe even get some GOP-leaning women to understand why the rights they’ve taken for granted for decades have been unceremoniously stripped away.
The reason is Republicans. Full stop.
You know what to do.
