In the 1850’s WE HAD TWO OPPOSITE SETS OF LAWS - AT THE SAME TIME - IN THE UNITED STATES OVER BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS. Does this sound familiar?
And to make matters worse the Supreme Court gleefully threw gasoline on the flames:
There were many factors which led to the start of the Civil War. However, one of the most famous contributors was an 1856 U.S. Supreme Court case known as Dred Scott v Stanford. The ruling on this case angered many occupants of Northern states. It was a single decision which eventually led to thousands of brutal deaths. This ruling would cause brother to slay brother without conscious or forethought.
Woman, lots of them, mostly poor or otherwise vulnerable are going to die - or be harmed in other ways - because of this Supreme Court decision. I don’t need to go into details. Use your logic. But overturning Roe is only the beginning. Next Red States are gonna sue Blue States for giving women from Red States abortions. Criminal charges are gonna be given to women who “illegally” obtain legal abortions in other states. If extremist, take-no-prisoners, Republicans get a complete control of the three branches of government they will attempt to outlaw abortion in ALL states. State rights and state laws and state constitutions be damned.
What constitutional rights are next on the chopping block? Read evil genius Clarence Thomas’ decision and see for yourself: Gay marriage and the right to use birth control. By why stop there? Nowhere in the constitution is it mentioned that an adult has the right to have sex with another adult in a LGBTQ relationship, or interracial marriage, or lots of other rights we all take for granted.
As if all of this is not bad enough, we have 95% of Republicans in power who still support and/or worship an evil conman and crook as their false god. As a result, there are many Republican misfits who hold office and/or are running for office who believe that if you don’t like the results of an election then CHEAT and overturn the election by any means possible.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that one of two things are gonna happen sooner, or later: 1. Enough Americans are NOT gonna care about democracy or elections as long as they have a roof over their head and food on the table, as a result our representative government is no more, and some form of dictatorship takes its place. Or, 2. All hell breaks loose in some unforeseen manner, like a civil war.
I don’t want either outcome. They both suck. The question is: Can the USA peacefully break-up so we can go our separate ways? Can we follow the brilliant example of Czechoslovakia? Or, are we gonna end up like Yugoslavia? Or, even worse, end up like Hungry or Russia, which are de facto dictatorships? Why can’t we learn any lessons from history or other countries?
The United States is a human construct. It’s not a law of nature. Change is one of the only certainties in life. We need to embrace change with courage and wisdom and not with fear and foolishness. The choice is ours!
