Warning: This is a rant. It is directed at a specific type of “Christian” (aka: ”Dominionists”), not Christians in general.
We are supposed to be a secular nation, as the Founding Fathers intended. Not once are the words "God", or "Jesus" mentioned in the Constitution. This was deliberate, and if y'all'd use your heads for something besides holding your ears apart, you'd understand why.
If you remember your elementary school history, the Puritans came to America for religious freedom. This nation was formed based on "Freedom of Religion", and in order to have that, the government must be secular. There absolutely, positively, MUST be a separation of Church and State. The US cannot have religious freedom in a theocracy. It is impossible, and I'll explain why:
Say this was a Christian Nation: Which denomination would be the ruling one? Which denomination would be THE denomination that would be recognized and approved by the Federal Government as the "official" religion?
Christian? Okay, but which denomination of Christian? Did you know, there are 200 recognized Christian denominations in the US. 45,000 worldwide.
And not a single one of y'all can agree on which interpretation of your Bronze-Age Holy Book is the "correct" one.
"But," you say, "We're all Christian, so it'll be fine."
No. No it won't. Look around you. Protestants hate Catholics, Progressives hate Fundies, and everyone hates the JWs and Mormons. And you Evangelicals? You think you're better than everybody! And y'all are convinced your denomination is the one bound for Heaven, and everyone else is bound for Hell.
And this is just among y'all Christians. There are a gazillion other recognized religions in this country: Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim, Ba'hai, and many, many flavors of Pagan, just to name a few.
...And the way y'all talk about them? Well, I guess there's no hate quite like “Christian” love, is there?
And I didn't forget the Satanists, Agnostics, or Atheists. They're an extra "special" group that gets the most hate, aren't they?
And every single scrap of disdain you people direct toward the rest of us is based entirely on ignorance. You think you know their beliefs and non-beliefs, but what you "know" is based on your indoctrination and what you've been told. Pure ignorance, and nothing more. Have you bothered to actually sit down, and listen to someone of a different faith from you? Ever?
And all this just brings me back around to the point: We cannot be a theocracy and still have religious freedom.
Take one look at Iraq. They're a theocracy. You want to live there? You think you'd have ANY religious freedom there? I mean, Shiite and Sunni are both Muslim denominations... and they're killing each other over a difference in ideology. Is that what you want here? Because that is exactly what you'd get.
"But what about Europe?" you ask.
Right. Of the 27 countries in the European Union, only three have an official state religion, these being Denmark (Church of Denmark), Greece (Church of Greece), and Malta (Catholic Church). Some other churches have a close relationship with the state (i.e. The Church of England). They all have religious freedom in their Constitutions. But here's the thing... Europe has had several centuries of waging war, forcing a religion on the people at the point of a sword, or the barrel of a gun, and just flat-out executing people over religious differences before they finally grew up and pulled their heads out of their asses (at least as far as religion is concerned... and I'm talking the government policies, not the individual -- there are assholes everywhere). Again, they grew up.
The US is not that mature. Take a look around you. Pay attention to the laws being passed, and what the Supreme Court is deciding. We have not grown up. Not at all.
For crying out loud, the Indigenous population in the US wasn't allowed to practice their own religion until 1978. Nineteen! Seventy! Eight! Forty-Four years. That's it. A whole butt-load of our population was born before then, and we're still alive and kicking. This is not ancient history, y'all. And while that might appear to be an improvement (it was, at the time), we're going backwards, now.
And you still think we should have a "State Religion"? Which denomination should be the top-dog? Hmm? Evangelical? Catholic? Methodist? Baptist? What about Pentecost? Amish? Mennonite? Christian Scientist?
As Connor MacLeod said, "There can be only one."
And you know as well as I do, no matter which one is chosen, the rest of y'all are going to be pissed. You'll scream and cry and gnash your teeth. You'll rend your clothes, and throw bricks, and organize and protest, and demand religious freedom, and be completely oblivious to the irony of that.
But, you're Christian, so you'll be able to do all that, and you'll be mostly left alone.
Maybe. For now.
Of course, your churches will be boarded up, and you'll be forced underground to practice your beliefs, and you won't be able to admit you're any flavor of Christian not officially "approved" for fear of losing your job, your home, your children...
…But, it'll be okay. Right?
After all, the new, theocratic government will come after the non-Christian religions, first. Oh, they might give a little bit of a pass to the other Abrahamic religions... briefly. But the rest? They will be forced to convert at the barrel of a gun. Guaranteed. And the Satanists, Agnostics, Atheists, and Pagans? We'll just end up in some Gulag in North Dakota. If not outright murdered in our homes. After they "clean up" all those nasty, heathen, demon-worshipers, who do you think they'll come after next?
And you know, States like North Dakota and Wyoming have an awful lot of wide-open space in the middle of nowhere to build more gulags... excuse me, they won't be called gulags. They'll be "re-education centers". You know? Like they have in China.
You think I'm exaggerating? Look around you! I mean, really open your eyes, set your biases aside, and LOOK! It's! Already! Happening! When a woman with ZERO time on any bench, let alone ever trying a case in a courtroom, tells the Senate Committee, under no uncertain terms, that she will make her decisions based on her religious beliefs, rather than her understanding of the one document that is the cornerstone of this nation -- and she still gets a seat on the Supreme Court -- we are already in deep doo-doo.
And that's not even the beginning.
Seriously, do you think they'll stop at ending safe, legal abortion? Guess again. They'll go after the LGBTQ community, women's rights, the rights of POC... Before long, even practicing the official State Religion won't protect you, if you're not a rich, white, male landowner.
It's simple: Religious Freedom means you can worship the way you want. And if your religion tells you that you can't do something, then YOU can't do it. I can do whatever the heck I want. In other words, live and let live... and mind your own damned business.
AND STOP LEGISLATING YOUR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS! <---That's the TL;DR, btw
