Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary today. How about that? President Carter is one of the most well-liked politicians in modern history, not because of his sabotaged tenure in office, but because he has spent his life being an example of excellence in public service. He’s well-liked around these here parts because he seems to be, more than most, a truly decent person, and his wife Rosalynn has been his partner through all of life’s ups and downs. She explained it to the Associated Press last year, on their 75th anniversary.
“We developed a partnership when we were working in the farm supply business, and it continued when Jimmy got involved in politics,” Rosalynn Carter told AP. “I knew more on paper about the business than he did. He would take my advice about things,” she added, drawing a laugh and affirmation from her husband.
Jimmy Carter celebrated his 97th birthday this year and Rosalynn Carter’s 95th birthday is a little more than a month away. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, anniversaries like the Carter’s “Spirit of 76” milestone are so rare that the U.S. Census Bureau does not keep statistics for them. Amazingly, “Only 6% of married couples make it to even 50 years.”
