The day after I posted my last update on the ducking situation here, I went out to the poultry pen and was greeted with the little one pictured above. It's the offspring of the lesbi-hens, appears to have been fathered by our mallard drake, and has fairly unique markings. White wing tips, two-tone feet and a white "bib" under it's chin. I can't wait to see what it looks like as an adult. And because of those markings, I named it Cowduck.
I haven't seen the snake again, and there have been no further uproars out there. But I know it's probably around here somewhere, so I brought this baby in immediately. It's tiny size pointed up how much the others have grown in a short time. This is the second time I've raised ducklings, and I'm still amazed at how quickly they grow.
After being thoroughly investigated by it's siblings Cowduck has settled in nicely. The brooder is getting a little crowded now. I'll have to move everyone into a larger container soon.
We bring them out once or twice each day to handle them, inspect them, and get them used to contact with humans. Of course they yell at first, but soon calm down and even relax in your hands.
My daughter had the inspired idea to offer them finely shredded apple as a treat. They love that. She also wants to try to train at least one of them to walk on a harness. Yes, duck harnesses are a thing.
Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed sharing.
