Live coverage: Aug. 23 primaries, runoffs, and specials in Florida, New York, and Oklahoma

Three states are holding primaries tonight. Oklahoma voters already went to the polls on June 28, but the state is now hosting runoffs in primaries where no one took a majority of the vote. New York also held primaries that day for statewide races, the state Assembly, and local office, but because the courts redrew the maps for the U.S. House and state Senate, those nomination contests are only taking place now. The Empire State also will carry out special elections in the 19th and 23rd Congressional Districts.

FL-04: We’re already at the threshold in this open seat race that favors the GOP (53-46 Trump). On the Republican side, as expected, state Senator Aaron Bean is crushing the field with 68% of the vote. The Democratic side is far closer, with businesswoman LaShonda Holloway leading former state legislator Tony Hill by a 54-46 margin.

FL-Gov: With the tallying of the early/VBM vote in several key counties (Broward and Pinellas, in particular), we have rocketed past the threshold in this race, and the results are not much of a surprise. Rep. Charlie Crist (who, of course, has run for this office as both a Republican and a Democrat and served the state as governor as a Republican during the Aughts) has a commanding 62-33 lead over state Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried.

FL-07: We’ve hit the threshold in this seat, a Democratic open seat that the GOP subsequently gerrymandered into a red seat (52-47 Trump). On the Republican side, veteran Cory Mills has a solid lead over state legislator (and far-right extremist) Anthony Sabbatini (Mills leads 49-21 in a multi-candidate field). On the Democratic side, it is early, but Karen Green has established an early lead with 45% of thre vote.

FL-13 (R): In another gerrymander-assisted D-to-R flip (53-46 Trump), the former seat of Rep. Charlie Crist is likely to fall in to the hands of the GOP. Right now, that primary is crazy close, with 2020 nominee (and Trump endorsee) Anna Luna only a few tenths of a percentage point ahead of attorney Kevin Hayslett.

FL-04 (R): We have our first call of the night, as state Senator Aaron Bean has been declared the winner by AP. At last check, he was cruising in this open-seat primary with 70% of the vote.

FL-15: In perhaps the closest thing to a swing open seat in the state (51-48 Trump), this central Florida district currently has Republican Laurel Lee (leading Kelli Stargel 43-24) and Democrat Alan Cohn (who leads Gavin Brown 36-21) as the early leaders.

FL-20 (D): This rematch of a special election primary turned out to not be competitive at all, as Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has easily been renominated.

FL-11 (R): This is a “wow” in the worst possible way: far-right extremist Laura Loomer, who is so incendiary she has been banned from social media and other outlets, actually has a 49-47 lead over incumbent Republican Rep. Daniel Webster with about 29,000 votes tallied.

FL-27 (D): In the Miami-centered 27th, which is a very closely divided district in the general election, it looks like state Sen. Annette Taddeo will be the Democratic nominee who goes on to face GOP frosh Maria Elvira Salazar. Taddeo leads Ken Russell 69-26 with 75% reporting.

FL-11 (R): Looks like we have our most dramatic race to watch in Florida in the giant retirement village of The Villages and its environs: incumbent GOP Rep. Daniel Webster has pulled back in front of Laura Loomer, now leading 49-47 after a surge of votes from the suburbs closer to Orlando, with 68% reporting.

FL-23 (D): One open seat race that turned out to be not very dramatic at all is in the 23rd, where the race is to succeed Democratic Rep. Ted Deutch. Jared Moskowitz is, as expected, dominating the Dem primary in this dark-blue suburban district, leading Ben Sorenson 64-20.

FL-10 (D): There’s another open seat race in the Orlando area, where the race is replace Democratic Rep. Val Demings (currently running for Senate), turned out to have two different unwelcome blasts from the past: ex-Reps. Alan Grayson and Corrine Brown. They’re back in 3rd and 4th place, however; the current leader is gun safety activist Maxwell Frost, narrowly leading state Sen. Randolph Bracy 34-25 (with Grayson at 16 and Brown at 10). The winner will face GOPer Calvin Wimbish in this light-blue district in November.

FL-Gov (D): Pretty much every county of size and consequence that’s not in the Central Time Zone has reported at least their early vote at this point, and the cake is feeling very much baked. Rep. Charlie Crist still holds a 60-35 lead over Nikki Fried.

FL-Gov (D): And there it is. The microsecond that the polls closed in the Central Time Zone, the AP called the Democratic primary for Governor in favor of Rep. (and former Governor!) Charlie Crist. He will face incumbent Republican Ron DeSantis in November.

FL-11 (R): Well, it’s disturbingly close still in Central Florida, but there is a caveat. Far-right extremist Laura Loomer still leads incumbent Rep. Dan Webster, but the margin is down to just 81 votes (out of over 58,000 cast!). Also, the vote tallies do not show anything in Orange County yet, which is where Webster should, in theory, do best. So watch this race...it’s easily the closest race in the Sunshine State tonight.

FL-11 (R): So, the state of Florida’s results site is considerably ahead of the media tallies, and they presumably do have the Orange County totals (their total vote is 83,000 votes, as opposed to 58,000 on the media sites). They also have Rep. Dan Webster ahead, albeit highly uncomfortably, over Laura Loomer (51-44). In terms of raw votes, that is a 5200 vote lead, which will almost certainly be more than Loomer can overcome.

FL-01: The Panhandle is now chiming in, and Rep. Matt Gaetz has a considerable lead over Mark Lombardo (64-29). Lombardo, for those who did not see the news, began running ads late in the campaign where he questions Gaetz’s loyalty to Donald Trump, even implying that he might’ve been the informant who sicced the FBI on Trump. You legitimately cannot make these things up. Alas, it did not work for Lombardo, as he is getting worked in the early balloting.

FL-13 (R): What once was a tight battle in this Tampa/St. Pete area district has widened out considerably, with 2020 nominee Paulina Luna now up 44-34 over Kevin Hayslett. Luna, who came close to incumbent Charlie Crist as an underdog in 2020, will be a betting favorite over Democrat Eric Lynn in this fiercely gerrymandered new district.

FL-11 (R): It was closer than many thought, but the AP has declared that incumbent Rep. Dan Webster has hung on in this Central Florida district, despite actually losing to extremist Laura Loomer in the infamous The Villages area of the district (Sumter County).
