Something popped up, and made me think of Dan Fogelberg. I used to have his album, the Innocent Age, back in the days of vinyl. I gave away all my old vinyl, a few years ago, since I can simply search YouTube, if I think of an old song I want to hear. I remembered that there was one song, on that album, that was truly my favorite. It was not one of his popular hits, but I simply liked it, better than his more popular songs. It took me a while, of searching, to figure out which one it was, since I did not recall the name of the song. I finally found it: Nexus.
It is such a great song, with such great lyrics, and the last time I heard it was years ago. Recently, I lost my second wife, Tonia, and some of the lyrics connected with the topic of dealing with grief and depression and fear. Seems to me, the problem with grief and depression, is the fear that it will just get worse, and that fear, which is truly a false fear, is the fear that causes folks to commit suicide, it seems to me. So, dealing with fear, seems very important. The lyrics talk about dealing with fear, and winning that battle.
I thought about simply posting a short diary, with the YouTube video of just that song, and then see if anyone enjoyed it. But, I started thinking about the way I often get so passionate about certain songs, that in my experience, those particular songs overshadow the other songs, by that same artist. So, I have no desire for their albums, no desire to go to a concert. I just want that one song. One band that truly defies that pattern, is the Beatles. They had so many great hits, that I truly like, as well as John Lennon and Paul McCartney, after the Beatles broke up.
But for most other major artists, including classical composers, they are, to me, one hit wonders.
Example: Bach.
Bach was a church organist, if I recall correctly, but he wrote one piece of music, that seems like intense devil music. I mean, I am an atheist, so I say there are no angels or demons, but I mean that this one piece by Bach, reminds me of music that others have written since, that was meant to be devil music. So, with all due respect to all his other work, I find myself feeling that this one work of his, overshadows all his other work, and he is, to me, a one hit wonder. The piece is, Toccata and Fugue in D Minor:
AC/DC is a great band, and I am sure their fans have several favorites. however, when their original lead singer died, they decided to make a song, with a special sound, that would indicate their desire to talk about his death. They are from England, and over there, the churches have large bells, made of bronze, as I understand. When anyone dies, the sound that speaks of their death, is the sound of that big church bell. They tried recording such a bell, in the bell tower of a church, but there was way too much noise from birds and wind. So, they had a bell made, just for them, so they could record the sound, while they rang it, in a sound studio. They did all that, and then, to make the bell sound twice as big and deep as the one they had made, they slowed the speed down to half speed, for the track they put into their hit song. That song is, Hell’s Bells. That song overshadows all their other songs, so, to me, they are one hit wonders. Here is their hit:
Down in the Houston, Texas area, where I lived for ten years, there was a band, that started up in the 1970’s I think. They have had many great hit songs on the charts, but, there is one that stands out, to me, so much, that I only want to listen to just that song, from that band. The band is ZZ Top. The song is, Rough Boy:
Now for the song that made me want to write this diary in the first place. First, let’s look at the lyrics, or at least some of the lyrics:
www.google.com/…
Across the vein of night
There cuts a path of searing light
Burning like a beacon
On the edges of our sight
At the point of total darkness
And the lights divine divide
A soul can let its shadow stretch
And land on either side --
Either side
And balanced on the precipice
The moment must reveal
Naked in the face of time
Our race within the wheel
As we hang beneath the heavens
And we hover over hell
Our hearts become the instruments
We learn to play so well
Wealthy the spirit
That knows its own flight
Stealthy the hunter
Who slays his own fright
Blessed the traveler
Who journeys the length of the light
Those words I put in bold, those are the words, that make me cry, so loud, shouting, bittersweet, but more sweet than bitter. I have been doing better and better, day by day, to overcome that fear, that false fear, that leads so many to end their own lives. So, I am that truly stealthy hunter, who slays my own fright, day by day, night by night.
Here is the song:
Well, take care of yourselves, and hug your family, and say HI, to neighbors and friends.
Eat very tasty foods, and interact with your friends, here at Daily Kos.
Hugs.
