This really isn’t how a government should operate. Not this government, anyway. The clusterfuck, however, is continuing. Here we go again, into ballot 15 in the quest to elect a Speaker of the House.
There won’t be a rules vote tonight after all. It will be Monday, giving Democrats plenty of time to remind all the non-maniac Republicans how McCarthy gave away all their shit.
Well that’s that. Speaker Gaetz McCarthy and all the Republicans cheer like it was some goddamned victory instead of the most craven display from a politician since that other Jan. 6, and that guy McCarthy will continue to grovel to.
Trump is taking credit for McCarthy’s win, with key phone calls made during the adjournment vote. That’s the claim anyway, and Maggie Haberman is dutifully passing it along.

Petty? Just a little.
Rep. Tom Emmer has been telling ppl on the floor NOT TO CLAP for Gaetz or Boebert when they announce their votes, per GOP lawmaker on the floor.— Melanie Zanona (@MZanona) January 7, 2023
Rep. Tom Emmer has been telling ppl on the floor NOT TO CLAP for Gaetz or Boebert when they announce their votes, per GOP lawmaker on the floor.
And Gaetz votes present.
The glee on McCarthy’s team is something to behold, considering Matt Gaetz just demonstrated the extent to which he completely owns the man.
Crane votes present and leaves the floor.
This, by the way, is the kind of chaos we will see every day in the House for the next two years. It’s going to be clusterfuck as far as the eye can see.
Biggs voted present, essentially clearing the way. Boebert did as well.
I was getting this new post together and was not able to share the truly inspired nominating speech for Jeffries from Rep. Dean Phillips. Go watch the replay if you missed it.
