How long will the next Speaker of the House last? Since 1789, Kevin McCarthy’s tenure of 269 days was the 3rd shortest in history.
In 1876, Speaker Michael Kerr of Indiana died in office after serving 280 days. New York’s Theodore Pomeroy served only one day in 1869.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) became the first speaker in U.S. history ousted from his position by a motion to vacate, 216 to 210.
Eight Republicans voted against McCarthy: Reps. Andy Biggs, Ken Buck, Tim Burchett, Eli Crane, Matt Gaetz, Bob Good, Nancy Mace and Matt Rosendale.
All Democrats voted to oust McCarthy. Four Democrats were absent for the vote.

“We don’t take an oath to a king, or queen, or a tyrant or a dictator. And we don’t take an oath to a wannabe dictator… we take an oath to the Constitution… and we’re willing to die to protect it.”
— Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mark Milley, at his retirement ceremony.
