Gov. Ron DeSantis’ mendacity seemingly knows no bounds. Last year, in September 2022, Florida’s director of the Office of Election Crimes and Security DIrector, Peter Antonacci, 74, died after abruptly leaving a contentious meeting in the governor’s office, and suffering a heart attack. He lay for 24 minutes outside the governor’s office before he was noticed. Yet, when his death wasyo announced, there was a lot of secrecy around the details of his death. Those who were present at the meeting were not named, nor that he died after a meeting in the governor’s office -the official reporting at the time is that he died “at work in the Capitol building”-; and, it was not revealed that he was undiscovered for 24 minutes after collapsing in the hallway. Although there is no foul play involved, it is staggering just how much control DeSantis places on his image. Without reporting from the Florida Bulldog, we would not know any of this.
The Florida Bulldog published redacted documents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), do not show whether the governor was in the conference room in his office, although the meeting was attended by the secretary of state, James Byrd, and Mark Gass, the FDLE commissioner. We are not told what the purpose of the meeting was. Given the Republican obsession with electoral fraud, it could have been anything your wildest nightmares can imagine. Antonacci is said to have become “frustrated” and “agitated” during the course of the meeting, according to those in attendance. When Antonnacci was finally discovered, frantic attempts were made to save his life, but those 24 minutes undiscovered proved fatal. This was a tragedy, but it is a tragedy that says a lot about the governor’s efforts to craft an image fit for the presidency. Of course, we all know that the governor will never be president, but that’s a truth he is still free of.
Rather than simply telling the truth and saying that a colleague had gotten heated during a meeting, gone outside, and had been left there because, i don’t know, they wanted to give him space while they carried on with their work, and that their colleague had suffered a heart attack and died, DeSantis chose obfuscation. These details emerge, not because DeSantis came out with them, but because a watchdog discovered the truth. If DeSantis can obfuscate over something which he is not guilty of, what does that say about his ethics? If you saw a man get hit by a bus, would you lie and say you were in a different city, or that you saw nothing, or, say that you had heroically tried to save him, even though you just stood there in horror? We have seen this from DeSantis. This is a man who claimed he helped send arms to Israel, something the Israeli ambassador to the U.S. had to deny. The truth and DeSantis are like oil and water. The man will lie and obfuscate over anything. Thankfully, he’s proven such an inept campaigner that we can be certain that he will never be our president.
