Rarely in politics does someone get as savagely ripped apart and exposed as DeSantis was at his debate with Gavin Newsom. If you missed it in its entirety, and rather die than watch anything on Fox news, you’ll have to settle for highlights from various news sources. Fox has reportedly burned the original, but is also making their own heavily edited highlights available.
A pretty comprehensive debate summary is below:
Q: What’s the shortest video ever made?
A: The video of DeSantis highlights in his debate with Gavin Newsom.
A post from NBC will give you surprisingly little sense of how pitiful DeSantis’ performance was.
But something much more important was demonstrated by this one sided debate. It served as a shot across the bow of the entire Democratic Party’s “rope a dope” messaging approach.
As horrible and repulsive as Republican messaging is, they get by in the absence of unbiased news coverage and effective Democratic messaging and challenges.
While biased media news coverage is partly but significantly to blame, the Democratic response to these fascist wannabes has also been deliberately scaled down in forcefulness and fighting spirit.
Unrealistic Expectations?
I suspect that somewhere inside the heads of the Democratic Party leadership, there is still hope that the Republican Party can be saved from itself and Trump. Biden is in a life and death struggle, along with the rest of leadership, with the Republicans. But they also seem to have not closed the door on resurrecting the two party system.
We can argue about how much recent poles are biased and lack credibility, but they have been basically stuck with Biden at 40% more or less for almost two years, that stagnation has to mean something.
I’m not concerned about how much the MAGA voters may be responsible for the figure. I’m concerned about how many potential democratic voters may not be enthused about Biden and not sufficiently fearful of the Republican agenda. That said, it’s important to note that Newson is not running for president, and supports Biden for the job. 2028, if there is an election that year, may be another story.
“Rope a Dope” Only Works When Followed by Heavy Hitting
Presently the campaign for 2024 still resembles the early rounds of Muhammed Ali’s “rope a dope” strategy against George Foreman. Ali’s manager Angelo Dundee reportedly shouted to Ali at one point later in the fight, “He’s plenty tired now, get off the ropes and knock him out.”
That doesn’t mean that Biden’s “rope a dope” strategies didn’t have their benefits. He’s been more than a competent and effective president and has survived Republican threats and media bias.
But that doesn’t mean it’s too late to change tactics to go more on the offensive.
You won’t beat the Republicans on a 12 round decision, the electoral college and the national media are in on the fix, you have to go for the knock out!
Newsom’s debate with DeSantis demonstrated for all to see that it’s long past “Rope a Dope” time with the Republicans. And that they can be exposed and trounced given the right circumstances.
Only by trouncing them in 2024 can we win enough seats in Congress to make the changes necessary for America to overcome the fascist threat. And I’m not talking about a challenge that will make many MAGA converts.
I’m talking about an offensive that will energize the Democratic Party base and rank and file in numbers as large as 2020. That is much more necessary if we are to win in 2024 and not get compromised by the electoral college biases.
Mass Demonstrations
They are vital in 2024 to build moral and help energize voter turn out. The Party leadership should support and not organize or discourage them. The common goal is to defeat fascism. We must vote in November as well as vote with our presence in Washington.
A turn out that is so large it cannot be ignored by the corporate media.
As far as I know, there are no major demonstrations scheduled for 2024. Giving the corporate media free reign to favor Republicans.
