Three people dead, five wounded in Michigan State University shooting

Michigan State University Police PIO Chris Rozman is confirming that the suspect has died of a self-inflicted wound.

They believe there was only one shooter. 

There is no longer a threat to campus.

There is no longer a need to shelter in place.

PIO confirms again three fatalities, in addition to the five victims transported to the hospital—some of those victims still have life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was located outside of the MSU campus and is confirmed dead.

"This truly has been a nightmare that we are living tonight. But we have remained laser focused on the safety of our campus, our students, and the surrounding community," says PIO Chris Rozman.

The Michigan State University Police public information officer also said a lot of misinformation has been circulating about the shooting. He urged people to follow the MSU Police twitter handle, @msupolice, and said they would be updating it frequently with accurate information.

Michigan State University police are continuing to urge everyone on campus to shelter in place. They are also urging everyone who isn’t on campus to stay away from campus. All campus activities have been cancelled for 48 hours, according to the public information officer.

Police in East Lansing held a press briefing and report that there are five wounded, some with life-threatening injuries.

According to the spokesperson, there is a single suspect, still at large, described as “a short Black man.” The spokesperson also said that they have video of said suspect and that they will be releasing images soon. 

Earlier reports of a fatality has not been confirmed. 

Another press briefing will be held at midnight ET.

The Detroit News is reporting one person has been killed:

MSU spokeswoman Emily Guerrant confirmed one fatality from the shooting inside Berkey Hall, which houses the College of Social Science, the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research and the Department of Sociology, according to MSU's website.

Michigan State University police say multiple people have been reported injured in shootings on campus.

The police made the statement Monday night on Twitter, saying there appeared to be only one suspect. It did not say if anyone was in custody.

Michigan State University police had ordered students and staff to shelter in place after a report of shots fired around the school’s East Lansing campus.

In an alert sent shortly after 8:30 p.m., campus police reported a “shots fired incident occurring on or near the East Lansing campus.” The alert advised students and staff to “Secure-in-Place immediately" and to monitor alert.msu.edu for information.

The East Lansing High School auditorium, where a school board meeting was being held Monday night, was locked down and people were being prevented by police from leaving, the Lansing State Journal reported.
