Help DKG Solidarity Group celebrate Valentine's Day! This story is part of a series of I ❤️ DK Guild posts written by Community members to show their support for the writing, activism, and site services work of DK Guild members. All of us together make Daily Kos the most vibrant progressive community on the net. Let's do everything we can to keep it that way!
I joined the GOS in December of 2005 after a year or so of lurking, but it took me a while to join the fray. In 2007, Bill in Portland Maine (BiPM) lost his job and decided to stop posting Cheers and Jeers. The kiddie pool denizens got busy trying to get kos to hire BiPM, and kos counter-offered:
So here's the deal: you guys can have Bill and C&J -- all of him, 100% -- if you can raise the money for his salary. He would be the first reader-supported writer on the site.
I'm not talking a fellowship, here. I'm talking about you guys directly supporting Bill's efforts.
To that end, I created a brand new PayPal account that would be "his". The fundraising goal is $50,000 for salary and benefits, which while a significant pay cut from what he was previously making, would be offset by the fun of hanging out with you guys on a "full-time" basis.
My first comment tossed in a benjamin for Bill. Fast forward 16 years, and here we are, this time supporting all the writers that the Community values so highly.
