Five weeks until the Wisconsin State Supreme Court election on April 4. This is 2023’s most critical showdown. Everyone needs to hear about it.
Tune in, read on, and chip in to help us reach our goal.
In 35 days, Wisconsinites will head to the polls. Two options: common sense, progressive, and pro-democracy Janet Protasiewicz, or disastrously ultra-MAGA Dan Kelly. The winner will hold the court’s tie-breaking vote. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
The primary results from last Tuesday are stunning.
Two hardcore right-wingers divided the GOP vote. But if you combine them both, they got fewer votes than Janet Protasiewicz in the primary. There’s a very clear path to victory here in the general.
Judge Protasiewicz is a lifelong public servant. She served more than 25 years as Assistant District Attorney, prosecuting serious crimes and (successfully) arguing at the Wisconsin Supreme Court. She’s been a judge in Milwaukee County since 2014.
The moment the primary ended, the Democratic Party of Wisconsin proudly endorsed Janet. We’ll be with her every step of the way in the general election. She’ll rule fairly and impartially on the court—instead of carrying water for politicians.
Dan Kelly, meanwhile, is almost a cartoon villain of a right-wing judicial activist. He was cashing checks from the GOP through December ‘22, advising on “election integrity”—including fake electors. He’s a walking, talking threat to democracy. Learn more.
Dan Kelly brags about how he’ll attract $20 million in independent expenditures to support his campaign, from right-wingers with “specific concerns.” That’s a frightening prospect. And a glimpse at who Dan Kelly would really represent on the Wisconsin state Supreme Court.
Dan Kelly is a fatally flawed candidate. But this is Wisconsin. And he’ll have unlimited funds.
If he wins, Kelly will be an agent of the ultra-right and the special interests who are funding his work. Wisconsinites will be a casualty.
Reproductive freedom is on the ballot. If a progressive judge wins this seat, we have a chance at a fair hearing in the case challenging Wisconsin’s near-total abortion ban—one of the harshest in the country.
Fair maps are on the ballot. Our maps are some of the worst in the country. Our gerrymandered maps put Wisconsin’s democracy on par with those of Jordan and the Congo—a “democracy desert.”
All that could start to change if we flip this seat.
2024 is on the ballot. In 2020, the Trump campaign sued to overturn Wisconsin’s election results. They came within one vote on our Supreme Court. In 2024, that could happen again. If there’s a clear pro-democracy majority on the bench, the will of the people can be protected.
Your contribution—of any amount—helps us all the way from the bottom to the top of our operations. Our organizing teams need basic supplies like clipboards, paper clips, and other tools that help their canvasses run smoothly.
Meanwhile, the party is supporting Janet’s campaign, so they can run powerhouse ads and educate voters on screens across the state. Everything from candidate recognition to voter education is absolutely vital in this race.
We’re not just running against Dan Kelly, we’re running against an American oligarch: Richard Uihlein, who funded Ron Johnson’s scorched-earth reelection campaign and now is doing the same for Dan Kelly. We can’t let them buy the court.
Grassroots dollars are stronger than billionaires.
Chip in before our February midnight deadline to help us meet our $20,000 goal and support our grassroots power to #flipthecourt.
Now is the time to finish strong.
These next 5 weeks will go by incredibly fast and the clock is ticking. It’s all gas no brakes from here through April 4 to send Judge Janet Protasiewicz to the Wisconsin state Supreme Court. Join us in the fight.
