This week, we’re helping a Georgia kindergarten teacher do a gardening project, and a Mississippi elementary teacher add to her classroom library. We hope that readers who support quality public school education will help by sharing or supporting our featured projects.
The Inoculation Project is an ongoing, volunteer effort to crowdfund science, math, and literacy projects for red-state public schools in low-income neighborhoods. As always, our conduit is DonorsChoose, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that facilitates tax-deductible donations to specific, vetted projects in public schools.
Good morning, TIP community! Remember a couple of weeks ago when I couldn’t be here most of the day because I was driving up to stay with my family? Yeah, so I broke a tooth last week, and that meant I had to come back to go to the dentist. And today, I am driving back up there again, so I will again not be in the thread here, starting not long after publication time. I’ll check in when I get there, late afternoon I hope. But as I’ve observed before, you guys know what to do. Thanks for being here! |
Mrs. Weston wants supplies to allow her Georgia kindergarten students to grow flowers from seeds, along with some books about plants and springtime.
PROJECT #1
Resources: Help me give my students resources to teach them how to grow a garden for spring!
Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households.
Location: W G Nunn Elementary School, Valdosta, Georgia
Total: $164.60
Still Needed: $141.60 Completed! Thank you! Please consider project #2 below.
Project description by Mrs. Weston: My Kindergarten students are the brightest cookies in the bunch. They are so willing to do their work to the best of their ability and always wanting to learn more. I want to give my students the opportunity to extend their learning in science by planting plants with them this year.
My students will be able to learn all about the plant life cycle through the resources that are needed for this project (seeds, soil, gloves, a humidity dome, and books).
I love to do this project with my students in the Spring. This is a great way to introduce the new season and to have beautiful flowers ready to go home for Mother's Day!
Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
This is one of the spring books in the request.
And here’s timelapse footage of a sunflower growing from seed, because when is that not fun?
This teacher on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast would like a popular series of books for her elementary-school students, because they’ve pretty much read everything she currently has!
PROJECT #2
Resources: Help me give my students books to make our classroom library one to be jealous of!
Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households.
Location: College Park Elementary School, Gautier, Mississippi
Total: $185.01
Still Needed: $161.48 Completed! Yay! If you were hoping to donate, especially if you’re seeing this on Thursday 3/30 (when all book projects get matching funds), there are a couple of book projects linked in this comment that could use our help.
Project description by Ms. Roberts: Our students are hardworking, determined, fun, and always ready to take on any challenge. They all come from different backgrounds, and they each bring something unique, amazing, and exciting to our school. Books are a way for students to escape reality and let their imaginations run wild. Our students love to read, and I enjoy getting to hear about the outstanding stories they have read. Needless to say, they have read almost every single book in our classroom library, so it is time for updating! I am so proud of our students and everything they have accomplished and overcome so far this year! "The more that you read, the more that you'll know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." - Dr. Seuss
Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
The requested “Big Nate” book series was the basis for an animated series on Paramount Plus.
BOTH our projects from last week were completed, with a BIG assist from our readers!
Project #1, We Need More Books of Substance!: Ms. Hill wanted her Kansas City early-grades Montessori students to have books that were more than just basic “see Spot run”, books that would encourage critical thinking.
She writes: Thank you so much for the donations for these books! I know that it will serve children for years to come and I can wait to see the research and writing that comes from the students being inspired from them. It means the world from the social and emotional being as well to the students and myself to receive the kindness from strangers.
[In responses to our individual donations, she also gave plenty of shoutouts to Daily Kos, including this: Thank you so much for your donation! I had no idea that our project was featured on Daily Kos. I will need to send a thank you to them as well! There are definitely future leaders in our group! Ms. Hill]
Project #2, Lego Team: Mrs. Mohtadi teaches Gifted & Talented 4th-5th grades in Dallas, and she needed enough Lego for her students to build their sustainable home designs. I picked this project specifically because it had been sitting since December and was running out of time. As hoped, our donations were able to help attract more and complete the project in time!
She writes: I cannot thank you enough for coming together to fund our Lego Team! Our students will be overjoyed to know that Legos will be part of their STEM experience. I cannot wait to see their ideas come to life as they build and create a better future. Thank you again with all my heart!
DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education. |
Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project combats the anti-science, anti-education push in conservative America by funding science, math, and literacy projects in red-state public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.
Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required!
Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1022! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
