Alabama birthday party erupts in gunfire- at least 4 dead

This happened last evening in Alabama, but did not see it reported here:

A mass shooting tied to an Alabama birthday party leaves 4 people dead and a ‘multitude of injuries’

I went to lots of birthday parties in my youth, but don’t recall anyone bringing a gun, or being shot. Why bring a firearm to a social event, especially something like a birthday party- what’s the thought process there ??
