Crazy Thought: Dems Help Kevin Keep Gavel In Exchange For Saving Economy

It’s no secret that Kevin McCarthy really, really, REALLY wanted to be Speaker of the House. He gave away so much to the MAGA wingnuts to become Speaker that he is now in the precarious position of being ousted by pissing off just one of them. This presents a great opportunity for Democrats to bring an end to the MAGA-McCarthy Debt Ceiling Crisis.

If McCarthy tries bringing a “clean” Debt Ceiling bill to the House floor, many of his members will freak out and eventually someone will try to remove him as Speaker.  Knowing this is a likely scenario, what if Hakeem Jeffries promises that in exchange for a “clean” bill, any time a GOP member tries to oust him the Democrats will provide just enough votes to keep McCarthy Speaker of the House through the end of this term? 

If he thinks he’s bullet-proof, McCarthy might have a come-to-Jesus moment where he “concludes” that the economic risks are too great and time is too short to futz around with debt ceiling issues and puts out a clean bill, hopefully one that extends past the 2024 election. Letting McCarthy continue to rule the roost isn’t bad for Democrats either — Comer, Jordan, Santos and MTG will remain the faces of the GOP as more futile investigations are launched and DOA-in-the-Senate bills are passed.

McCarthy has already proven how far he will bend over to be Speaker. This isn’t that much further to bend in order to prevent the U.S. economy from going over a cliff. It’s a crazy thought, but so is risking default on our debt.
