Welcome to the Street Prophets Coffee Hour, the place where politics meets up with religion, science, art, and life. Come in, have a cuppa and a cookie (or three!) and join us.
Helping Humpday is the Wednesday Street Prophets Coffee Hour. It was created for us by bfitzinAR and was taken over by Dixiecollie, who also left suddenly. Now it’s njm5000 who keeps the list of Kossacks in need. Helping Humpday is still here, the place where we can show caring and offer help.
Hooray for the Kossacks who help those in need, whether with donations or recs or words of support. It takes all of that to get the job done, and Kossacks are the best at it.
I’ve had questions about the needs list, and I don’t want those to discourage anyone needing help. It takes a lot of courage for most people to come to the community and admit a need, and it signals a kind of desperation, not knowing where else to turn.
No, I don’t vet each person personally. I trust the community to monitor our own, but I list all needs unless I’m given a reason not to. The needs listed are self-reported. Use your own best judgment.
Community Needs List as of 9/20/23. Fundraisers who want a diary to be or stay on the list: PLEASE kosmail requests and donations received to njm5000 by Tuesday evening to be included on the Wednesday morning updated list.
Living on the financial edge—need help? Check out the Helping Directories before your next emergency.
As always, fundraisers are free to post a brief ask and donation links as a reply to the List.

CentristandProud—Has an urgent need to pay a deductible prior to an upcoming surgery for their partner. Another medical patient requires help Long story short, this surgery is needed towards having any quality of life. From the diarist: “Covering this deductible, to us, means we can save our monies for the multiple, not covered, co-pays and visits and extra tests that their “all-inclusive” prices fail to mention. This is her life. I refuse to put a price tag on it. Help if ye can. We understand if you cannot. Life is not easy these days.” gofund.me/… • www.paypal.com/…

anotherdemocrat—has a diary up: Anyone know where I can find a 2nd job? She’s in Austin and is suddenly $24000 in debt, mainly due to an HOA assessment! From the diary: “So, $24,000 is more money than I can ask even a big community like Daily Kos to donate. I have a venmo: at Becky-Helton, Cashapp: $B3ckyHelt0n, and GoFundMe, if anyone wants to help with next month’s payments but for a big total like that, I need a 2nd job. My day job is M-F from 8-5, so it would have to be evenings & weekends.” and “Skills: writing, 20+ years of customer service work, super reliable…” Kosmail, if you can help.
BMScott posted this: From a Daily Kos Guild tweet about Christopher Reeves: “Christopher's house burned down early in February. Kos Katalogue 2023 final version for this year. Holidays are coming and great gifts can be found here for any occasion.
When sending via PayPal, be sure to select “Send to family/friend” to avoid fees on either end. Be aware, both donor and recipient, that GFM not only charges fees to recipients and asks donors to contribute to their organization, but also money received through that platform is treated as taxable income. You will receive a form 1099. If you are requesting help through GFM, also be aware that there can be delays in accessing the money. There has been some confusion about GFM fees. When you donate, they ask for a tip. You can decline and have no extra charge. This is not the same as the fees charged to the person raising funds. GFM will take money from the amount raised, and it isn’t voluntary.
If helping financially isn’t the right choice for you at this time, you can still help. Tip and rec the diary so it stays visible. Share on social media: Twitter, Facebook, whatever platform you use, to bring the attention of others outside our daily readers. And offer words of encouragement to people who are struggling. It can be scary to be struggling, and it can feel lonely. This can happen to any of us. Today it isn’t me in need. If it isn’t you, either, please see what you can do to help.
