Navarro is insane
Insanity is not a medical condition. The word is not in the DSM V, the diagnostic manual of the psychiatric profession. It does have a legal meaning, but that refers to people who "lack both the substantial capacity to appreciate the wrongness of their actions and the substantial capacity to conform their actions to the law." In Navarro’s case, while he does not think he is a criminal, he can recognize that his behavior could be considered illegal.
So when I say that Peter Navarro is insane, I am using the lay definition – which means his mental processes are self-destructive, loathsome, and beyond the expected normal range of people who live in a society with others.
The latest evidence for his parlous mental state is a tweet in which he said,
“Watched Hutchinson in West Wing suck candy daily outside Meadows office doing NOTHING. Pimping new "book" with White House loser alyssa farah. Hutchinson sold soul to J6 witch hunt. This her next 15 minutes of fame. @RudyGiuliani hero, Cassidy trash.”
He then quoted his own tweet to add:
“Why would White House men - prez, vp, senior aide - EVER hire a woman after watching book pimps Cassiday Hutchinson, Alyssa Farah, Stephanie Grisham, Kayleigh McEnany, Olivia Troye throw mud @realDonaldTrump @RudyGiuliani et. al. Pimp ladies be giving real MAGA WOMEN bad name
Navarro's vile sexism is particularly nuts as he is awaiting sentencing for his two contempt of Congress convictions. I expect the judge in his case, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, is a fair-minded jurist who will decide Navarro’s penalty based on precedent and a reasoned analysis of the quality of Navarro’s actions.
However, the judge has a range — between 30 days and a year for each charge — and can decide whether the sentences are concurrent or consecutive. This flexibility means that Navarro faces between 30 days and two years. The judge can also impose a fine of up to $100,000 on each count.
No matter how equitable Mehta may be, he has ears and eyes. This crass chauvinism will at least inform his subconscious. Worse, the judge may deliberately factor in Navarro’s impenitent disposition. A sane defendant would be on his best behavior between now and the sentencing date. But Navarro is behaving badly. Ergo, he is insane, QED.
We should not be surprised. That there was a trial in the first place is further proof Navarro is deranged. All this moron had to do was go to Congress and decline to answer their questions. But he fancies himself as some constitutional superhero. It is time for Petey to grow up.
Parsing the original tweet
”Pimping” is providing prostitutes to Johns and taking a piece of the action. It is hard to see how promoting a book is “pimping.” For instance, who is the prostitute in this case? It cannot be the book. Navarro must see these female authors as both the procurer and the harlot. Note: If book promotion is the same as illegal commercial sex, Navarro is a well-seasoned practitioner of the art, as he has pimped 32 books.
Navarro is also either a liar or a stalker. He says: “Watched Hutchinson in West Wing suck candy daily outside Meadows office doing NOTHING.” His office was on the second floor of the West Wing, Hutchinson was on the first floor beside her boss. Does Navarro have X-ray vision?
Lastly, he calls Rudy Giuliani a “hero”. That is insane.
Parsing the additional commentary
Navarro’s sexism is overt. His antediluvian world is populated by the Samsons of achievement and Delilahs who would cut their hair. The Trump White House was staffed with real men, “prez, vp, senior aide” (guess who the senior aide is in Navarro’s fantasy) undermined by mud-throwing “book pimps Cassiday Hutchinson, Alyssa Farah, Stephanie Grisham, Kayleigh McEnany, Olivia Troye."
And he adds Trump to pussy-grabber Hall of Fame.
Navarro ices his misogyny with some backhanded racism. “Pimp ladies be giving” is how a white guy wears vernacular black face. Navarro does not elucidate what qualities make his ladies “real MAGA WOMEN.” I am scared to imagine.
Conclusion
This nastiness is nothing new for Navarro. In a Trump administration stocked with bigots, egomaniacs, fanatics, racists, and women-haters, the competition to be the supreme shit on the block was cut-throat. Navarro brought his A-game. He was so profoundly disagreeable that he had to be spanked by former Chief of Staff John Kelly, who in 2018 investigated complaints that Navarro was a world-class asshole.
Navarro was particularly fond of demeaning female staffers. WaPo reported:
The trade adviser routinely exploded at his assistants while scheming to undermine other senior White House officials.
Young women appeared to suffer the most verbal abuse. Some female White House employees complained that Navarro, 71, was habitually disrespectful, assigning professional women to act as note takers during policy meetings rather than allowing them to participate.
Kelly reportedly told Navarro “If it’s worse than what I’m hearing, you’re gone. If it’s as bad as what I’m hearing, I don’t know. You may be gone.” Navarro was not shy to offer his opinion of Kelly saying, “From a media perspective, this was like recruiting a trucker to drive a Formula One car. Or maybe like using a chainsaw for open heart surgery.” He added Kelly was “brutally and simply incapable of messaging anything to the press.”
Navarro is capable of messaging. And the message is clear. The man is a steaming pile of ego, anger, bile, and stupidity.
