I fully admit: I too have to suppress my dark moments. That does not mean I live in a hermetically sealed bubble of good vibes all the time, or completely avoid dystopian visions of post-November 5th as viewed from the fetal position. But ultimately, hope is a verb as much as it is an attitude. It is about believing we will win in the first place, rather than assuming the worst in Americans— which is exactly the assumption that drives Right-wing bullshit. It is about doing shit ( sending postcards, knocking on doors, making calls etc). Viewed from the Right, Americans are simply hopeless rubes and lemmings that can be played like a Wurlitzer. And those are their supporters….
And sometimes, at certain points in our history, this has been true…. but not as much as we tend to think. The notion that everything sucks, people are generally bad, etc, is also a media-approved vision of reality that often does not comport with what is in evidence when we zoom in, or simply open our eyes.
You may have noticed, but this month is shaping up to be batshit crazy: full of ups and downs,( polls and mood swings!), black swan events ( hurricanes and strikes), but we need to remember a couple of truths here before we find ourselves feeding the negative spiral that attends so many of the political diaries here. For one thing, despite the orgy of prognostication, NOBODY knows how this shakes out. We are the authors of our destiny here. If you want absolute certainty, my friends, you are living in the wrong century.
I believe Harris and the Dems have one huge advantage going into this...
Donald Trump is an odious known quantity, and a stale, polarizing one. I personally refuse to believe his support is as solid as it was in 2016, or even 2020— even among his diehard supporters. Americans have experienced this shit show before, and I believe that they mostly remember the chaos, division, Covid deaths, and how the discourse and ineptitude tore this country apart. Do I think that some Americans thrive on that negative shit ( absolutely), but not the majority...I also firmly believe that people will still crawl over glass to vote against Trump and his Anti-Choice party.
Optimism of the Will people!
