The South Western School Board has reportedly ordered district officials to cut holes in its restroom walls in order to watch students while they use the restrooms.
This is a disgusting invasion of privacy. We categorically condemn the board’s actions and stand with the students, parents, and community members who have spoken out against the board’s perverted obsession with watching students while they use the restroom.
The board’s decision was reportedly motivated specifically by the desire to monitor any LGBTQ students who might be using the restrooms. The holes were first reported by district parents and later confirmed by The York Dispatch.
The holes are positioned to allow “anyone passing by to peer inside,” according to the newspaper’s reporting. The board members have admitted they ordered the holes to be cut in the bathrooms to "increase oversight of the wash area."
The holes were reportedly suggested by the Independence Law Center, a Harrisburg-based law firm that has been connected to a nationally recognized anti-LGBTQ hate group.
The school board previously passed a policy that governed which restrooms transgender students were permitted to use. Those restrooms were marked “gender inclusive” and could be used by either transgender or cisgender students.
The board reportedly ordered that holes be cut to watch students use the gender inclusive restrooms but did not do the same for the district’s other restrooms.
Reporting from The York Dispatch suggests that the holes also allow the sounds of students urinating and defecating to escape into the hallways, which has caused anxiety among the students who are required to use the affected restrooms due to the proximity of their assigned classrooms.
This is among the most disturbing stories in the recent history of American public education. No adult should ever attempt to watch someone else’s child use the bathroom in this manner. This is deviant behavior that is well beneath the dignity of the office that these school board members currently occupy.
School board members should make all of our children feel welcome at school, not carve a hole in the bathroom wall in order to watch them during a private moment. That’s sick. It’s wrong. It’s inappropriate. It’s unacceptable.
