My gut feeling is that we’re going to win, and even win somewhat big. (But I know that in the Age of Trump, surprising things can happen, and so it is good for us to have that element of Terror that drives us to “run all the way to the tape.”)
The Enthusiasm makes us mighty enough to win, but the Terror compels us to “leave it all on the field.” (The Enthusiasm is part of why we’re stronger, as the Democratic Enthusiasm still apparently outstrips that on the other side.)
To make sure the Terror remains adequately present, the Word put out by the Kamala side is always “It’s terribly close,” “It’s a virtual tie,” it’s a “dead heat.” Meaning, no one should let up.
And this is combined with those elements of joy and hope that constitute the Enthusiasm— the Enthusiasm that can accomplish such amazing things as inspiring a crowd of 75,000 people to gather together ((large enough to stretch from the Ellipse to the Washington Monument)) to support our candidate, the one person who stands between us and the Fascism of a the unprecedentedly dark American regime that a Trump victory would bring.
I don’t think it’s a dead heat, but I’m all for our leaving nothing to chance and our going all out in these final days to squeeze every last bit of pro-Democracy power from this American electorate.
Both the Enthusiasm and the Terror are functions of so many people understanding, at some level, that this election is a major showdown in the battle between Democracy and Fascism in America. (Which also can be boiled down to a battle between two forces that it would be reasonable to call Good and Evil— where “Evil” is defined as “a coherent force that consistently works to make the human world worse, or more broken.”)
