I can’t buy into the post mortem explanations that some voters went full trumpo because they carefully analyzed Harris’ answers on the View, or her response to some question on the Colbert show, and therefore they had some carefully nuanced thoughtful introspection that made them decide the orange garbageman, faux McDonald’s worker was the best choice to run this country.
I don’t even have much faith in the explanations that this disaster wholly happened because the campaign was badly run, or that Joe didn’t get out early enough, or that we didn’t have a real primary.
Nor, do I believe that the trump voters have some deeply held antagonisms about “coastal elites” disrespecting them and therefore decided to vote en masse as a thought out act of revenge.
All of those things didn’t help, but I think its just way more simple than all of that.
I’ll probably get blasted, but I’ll just say what is not supposed to be said out loud in polite conversation. I think the vast majority of trump voters are just plain stupid (excepting the billionaires, nazis and religious zealots who have their “reasons”).
What’s my evidence? Have you observed the interviews of them at their rallies, where they can’t even name the 3 branches of government or come up with correct answers to other basic civics questions? How about the trump-voting workers in PA who just found out they’ll get no Christmas bonuses because of impending tariffs but they voted for trump because he told them China would pay for the tariffs. How smart is it to vote for the guy whose minions have plans to cut your Social Security and screw up your Medicare?
We’ve all seen them in their red hats mindlessly slavering behind him at his rallies, chanting “Lock her Up” and other stupid crap, and pretty much out and out saying that their orange jeezis is like the second coming. How about when they sat in rapt attention when he swayed back and forth to his playlist at the recent rally? How about buying into his explanation for his gibberish that he’s actually doing a complex oral presentation called “The Weave”? Believing that he’s a very “stable genius”? Are those smart people who eat that stuff up?
Would anybody with a brain actually spend their hard earned money on Chinese Trump Bibles, Trump-Sneakers, his NFTs, swaths of cloth from his “debate suit” or all of the other crap he peddles? Wearing big band aids on your ear? Dressing up in a garbage bag? Piling on so many trump flags that you sink your boat? Can we just admit the painful fact that we have a lot of stupid voters in this country who don’t know basic facts nor bother to try and learn about issues beyond what fox news tells them they should think?
The vote was stupid and the people who voted for him were stupid. The “WHY” of the stupid is another question. Did Tik Tok make them stupid? Joe Rogan? Lack of basic civics education in high school? Fox news? The Kardashians?
“Idiocracy” comes to mind. I don’t know how we got here, but the rest of the civilized world pretty much thinks we must be kind of stupid. Maybe that simple explanation deserves some scrutiny as opposed to all the other more complex nuanced explanations. I think we need to fix the stupid in the electorate if we expect that electorate to make better choices. I regret, I don’t have the answers on how do to do that.
