Today's Oregonian had some disturbing news. As of Thursday, only 38% of Portland voters had turned in their ballots. Coupled with the news that Republicans are 4 percentage points ahead of Democrats in returning ballots statewide. (51% to 47%), this could affect statewide races. If Democrat-rich Multnomah County does not vote heavily, it can tip the balance for statewide races, since most of the rest of the state except Eugene is mostly Republican.
One explanation, though a poor excuse, is that Portland alone is using ranked-choice voting for its new city government this year. With as many as 30 candidates running for each of four council positions, it is a slow process to study the candidates, choose the ranking, and mark the ballots. So, Oregonians, we need to prod friends and relatives to get it done! We need that Blue Wall!
