This week, we’re helping two elementary school classes — a Florida class needing models and charts of the solar system, and an Iowa class needing books. We hope that readers who support quality public school education will help by sharing or supporting our featured projects.
The Inoculation Project is an ongoing, volunteer effort to crowdfund science, math, and literacy projects for public schools in low-income neighborhoods. As always, our conduit is DonorsChoose, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that facilitates tax-deductible donations to specific, vetted projects in public schools.
We have two new projects this week, and that is always good news!
Mr. Conley teaches elementary school in a Florida town just south of Jacksonville, and he’s hoping to get his class some posters and charts AND a working model to help them understand the solar system.
PROJECT #1
Resources: Help me give my students some real good models and charts of the solar system.
Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households.
Location: W.E. Cherry Elementary School, Orange Park, Florida
Total: $397.69
Still Needed: $103.87 Completed, thank you! Please consider project #2 below!
Project description by Mr. Conley: Most of my students have certain thoughts about planets and the solar system. I plan to harness all of those thoughts and help them realize the many new things that are out there for them. Science is about learning the unknown and most space is that. If getting one of these things helps one student to learn something new, then they have served their purpose. Most of these kids have only known about space from what they heard from tv, my hope is to give them some real knowledge that they can take with them as they continue to grow.
Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
I’ve seen a picture of the selected earth-sun-moon model, but there’s no interesting video about it specifically. So instead, please gaze in astonishment at this high-end brass 9-planet (with moons!) clockwork orrery, which is made by a company of artisans who don’t bother to state their prices because if you have to ask...
Our new project #2 is substantial, but I don’t offer such projects unless we have time to finish them. Mrs. Meyers teaches fourth grade in a town northwest of Des Moines, and she needs more books to help turn her students into lifelong readers!
PROJECT #2
Resources: Help me give my students many different levels of books to choose from.
Economic need: An Equity Focus School; more than half of students from low‑income households.
Location: Perry Elementary School, Perry, Iowa
Total: $475.21
Still Needed: $475.21 $336.39
Project description by Mrs. Myers: The only books many of my students have access to are from my classroom. These books will enhance my classroom library.
Students become better readers by reading.
They need lots of books available to them. I want to expose my students to many different genres and characters. I want my students to be able to see themselves in these books. My goal is for my students to read books because they enjoy reading not because I ask them to read. I like having many different series of books because if you can get someone hooked on one book, they will come back for more!
Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
There are several book series represented in this request, including this one, Total Mayhem.
BOTH our projects from last week were completed! Thank you to our readers, in this anxious election season, for setting a bit aside to help schools!
Project #1, Building Math Foundations: The Power of Manipulatives: Ms. Sutherland wanted her North Carolina kindergarten to have tools to help them understand math.
She writes: I can't express how grateful I am for your generosity in fully funding my project. Your support has truly touched my heart and will have a lasting impact on my students' lives.
With your help, we can create a learning environment where every child feels inspired and engaged. I can't wait to see how these resources will empower them to reach their full potential!
Thank you for believing in our students and for making a lasting difference in their education.
Project #2, Lost Children of Sudan: Mrs. Filippelli wanted her Iowa middle school students to learn about children’s experiences in the Second Sudanese Civil War.
As I write, she has not seen the good news yet! We’ll bring you her note in a future post.
DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education. |
Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project seeks to fund science, math, and literacy projects in public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.
Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required!
Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1134! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
