My despair over the disaster that was Tuesday has transitioned to pure white-hot fury. The fact that a majority voted to put that treasonous son of a bitch back in the White House has completely destroyed my hope for the future of this country. These people are not fellow Americans, not any more. As far as I’m concerned, the idea of America as an example of democracy for the world is history, effective this week.
So, what next? For starters, If we know someone who voted to wreck the country, they’re now dead to us forever. We have (had) some MAGA “friends” who would occasionally visit for a BBQ or whatever. No more. One of them is caring for a sister with severe autism, and Mrs. R would sometimes watch her for a few hours when they needed the help. No more. This home will never again be welcome ground to these people. They’re not our friends and they’re not good people.
We learned yesterday that Mrs. R’s oldest brother and his wife voted Trump again. (They went Trump in 2016, then Biden in 2020.) Boy, did she ever let him have it. It was epic. We’ll never see either of them again.
Very dark times are ahead. We’ve told both of our daughters to seriously think about emigrating if they can. We have a college fund for our 12 year old granddaughter that should accumulate enough by the time she’s 18 to cover most of it. That money will only be forthcoming if she agrees to leave this country for good upon graduation; we don’t want her to live in what this nation has become.
As for us, we’ve already applied for our passports and a realtor is stopping by today to work up a market assessment on the house. No idea yet where we’ll go (First choice was Canada, but that’s out — They don’t want retirees), and it may be a year or more before it happens, but we’re leaving. Tuesday was the last straw. This isn’t our country any more and we don’t want to live here.
