The leader of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Dennis Schnurr, last week offered an election prayer that contained the sentence, “Give us the government we need, not the government we deserve.” Well, that certainly didn’t happen.
I’m 76 and for most of my life, I’ve believed the typical American cared for the values of democracy. That illusion was shattered this Election Day. I now see the majority of Americans are driven by greed, racism, xenophobia, homophobia and misinformation. They don’t care about democracy. They don’t care about other people. They only care about themselves. They elected the government we deserve. And I feel ashamed for my Country.
