So here we have a Generic Average White woman asking the simple question of Black People: How would you feel If we had a big White Beach party?
The simple answer to that, of course, is: We would feel exactly the same way as we already do now.
It’s already the case that we don’t get invited into jobs we’re qualified for because we might have a “Black Sounding” name.
Applicants with white-sounding names were 50 percent more likely to be contacted for job interviews than those with typical black names. There were no significant differences between the rates at which men and women were contacted.
Thanks to the Supreme Court, we might not get admitted to schools because if they did people might feel we don’t belong there. Or if one of us were a pilot, someone like Charlie Kirk might question if we’re “qualified?”
"If I see a Black pilot, I'm gonna be like 'boy, I hope he is qualified,'"
If we try to get a loan or buy a house, we might get ripped off by bogus loan terms or have our loans unfairly denied.
Specifically, we found that the purchase mortgage denial rate for Black homebuyers across the 50 largest U.S. metros is an average of 5.30 percentage points higher than the denial rate for the overall mortgage borrower population.
- In each of the nation’s 50 largest metros, Black homebuyers are more likely to be denied a purchase mortgage than the overall population of homebuyers. On average, 14.44% of Black homebuyers are denied a mortgage — 5.30 percentage points higher than the average denial rate of 9.14% across the overall population.
- Buffalo, N.Y., Raleigh, N.C. and Boston have the largest percentage point differences between the denial rates for Black borrowers and the overall borrower population. Across these metros, the denial rate for Black borrowers is an average of 8.89 percentage points higher than the overall mortgage denial rate. Plus, their respective denial rates for Black borrowers of 18.43%, 15.89% and 16.16% are higher than those in most of the nation’s other largest metros.
If we try to rent an apartment we might be denied and blocked.
Many Black and Brown people confront these pressures when searching for apartments because of the criteria landlords often use to decide whether someone will be a “good tenant.” When evaluating tenants, landlords often rely on criminal records, credit scores and eviction records, which can negatively impact Black and Brown applicants. Landlords’ preconceived notions about the personal character of anyone with a past criminal conviction has devastating consequences for Black and Latino prospective renters.
Landlords’ use of criminal records to evaluate tenants can have an overwhelmingly negative impact on Black and Brown people, who are incarcerated respectively at 5 and 1.3 times the rate of White people. Although denying someone housing based on a criminal record isn’t the same as racial discrimination, this overrepresentation by race means the practice still generates discriminatory effects. The reasons for that overrepresentation include racial biases which influence discriminatory policies like New York’s infamous stop and frisk as well as Black people being 4 times more likely to be arrested than White people for drug offenses despite Whites and Blacks selling drugs at the same rate.
Non-White Americans are further set up to fail in several areas that have had a long history of discrimination. Discriminatory credit scoring practices, intentional targeting by predatory mortgage lenders in the runup to the 2008 foreclosure crisis and disproportionately high rates of foreclosure after said crisis devastated many of these homeowners’ credit scores. Black Americans were also excluded from the homeownership benefits of the GI bill after WWII. These and other discriminatory patterns mean that Black and Brown tenants are also far more likely to have been targeted in eviction proceedings — another blunt tool frequently used by landlords to speed up tenant screening and avoid considering people’s individual experiences and character.
Let’s discuss some of these in detail over the flip.
Another thing we aren’t invited to is the presumption of innocence because If you are Black you are about 5 times more likely to be arrested and charged with a drug crime — even though Black and White people use and sell drugs at the same rate.
- Nationwide, blacks comprise 62 percent of drug offenders admitted to state prison. In seven states, blacks constitute between 80 and 90 percent of all people sent to prison on drug charges.
- Nationwide, black men are sent to state prison on drug charges at 13 times the rate of white men.
- Two out of five blacks sent to prison are convicted of drug offenses, compared to one in four whites.
- Black men are incarcerated at 9.6 times the rate of white men. In eleven states, they are incarcerated at rates that are 12 to 26 times greater than that of white men.
- Nationwide, one in every 20 black men over the age of 18 is in prison. In five states, between one in 13 and one in 14 black men is in prison.
Because of this, when a Black person walks into a store or a car dealership — they are often asked if they belong there since they “obviously don’t have the credit and/or can’t afford the merchandise.”
A 2018 Gallup poll of black Americans found that nearly two-thirds perceived that blacks are treated less fairly than whites while shopping – a figure that has steadily increased over the past decade. When asked about being treated unfairly due to their race in the last 30 days, more blacks reported unfair treatment while shopping (29%) than in any other circumstance – even interactions with the police (21%).
Experiences of “shopping while black” include everything from slights, like being ignored in favor of a white patron, to serious attacks on dignity and liberty, like being detained and questioned after making a purchase or handcuffed on suspicion of shoplifting.
Contrast this with the experience of the prototypical ideal consumer, the middle-class white woman. A 2006 ethnographic study of toy stores not only found that middle-class white women were often given preferential treatment, but also that the police were never called on them, even when their behavior was aggressive.
If we’re walking in certain neighborhoods we might be asked what are we doing there?
Or if we’re driving a nice car we might be pulled and asked “Is this car stolen?” and “who are you” even when there’s no suspicion of a crime?
This is the kind of shit we have to deal with. I absolutely guarantee you there is not a single black person in this nation — except maybe Candace Owens [until she got fired by the Dailywire for challenging Ben Shapiro] — who has not experienced some of this crap.
So this woman is asking how we would feel if we weren’t invited to the White Party?
Excuse me, but exactly when the fuck were we ever invited to anything?
When did we get a gold-plated invitation to the party? I didn’t see one. Maybe it got lost in the mail.
This country was founded on treating us as only 3/5th of a person. We were property, not really people. Even after that was changed, protection of our rights to vote and frankly to live did not exist for the next 100 years.
And the extent of that “protection” is that we maybe get to file a lawsuit when someone fucks us over. Obviously, that has worked incredibly well at curtailing discrimination. Clearly, all the bigots are shaking in their boots at the possibility of going to court to justify their bullshit.
Yep, we got them on the run. You betcha.
But don't have us have a Black Beach Party — to which even this Karen could attend if she wanted, because White people even go to HBCUs if they want -- because that’s just going too far.
That’s too much to ask.
Also, have a happy St. Patrick's Day because, clearly, that’s not bothering anybody.
And let me add a double FUCK YOU to RFK jr. for his ridiculous claim that we don't need to top Racism.
That’s human nature, it will never stop.
Black people need to just “Shake Off” Racism and teach their kids to be “More Resilient.”
Really?
Mutha Fucka the only reason most of us don’t spend all our time and energy trying to treat fucking White People the way they treat us is because We. Are. Shaking. This. Shit. Off.
And we are already resilient. Asshole.
But that doesn’t mean we have to be tolerant and make excuses for fucking racists. It's not “human nature” it’s a virulent pathology of violence and hate and we don’t need to be tolerant of that shit. Period.
