Representation matters. Different points of views matter. Joe Biden not only knows this and talks the talk about it, he also walks the walk.
For example, in his judicial appointments.
Most of Biden’s appointed judges to date are women, racial or ethnic minorities — a first for any president.
Nearly two-thirds of the federal judges President Joe Biden has appointed so far are women, and the same share are members of racial or ethnic minority groups, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of statistics from the Federal Judicial Center.
Biden still has more than a year left in his term, so these patterns could change. But no president has ever before appointed a slate of judges consisting mostly of women or racial and ethnic minorities.
The 95 women judges Biden had appointed as of Nov. 5 far exceed both the number and share any other president had appointed at the same point in their term.
The pattern is similar when it comes to judges who are racial or ethnic minorities. Nearly two-thirds of the judges Biden had appointed as of Nov. 5 (96 of 145, or just over 66%) are Black, Hispanic, Asian American or members of another racial or ethnic minority group. That is far more than any other president had appointed at the same point in their tenure.
NPR explains why appointing a diverse bench is so important to President Biden:
In the end, federal courts may be one of Biden's deepest legacies, since judges often get the last word on what the law means and how it plays out in people's lives.
White House chief of staff Ron Klain said the judiciary has been a "top priority" for the president, and there's a simple reason why.
"When he talks about rights and liberties, he knows that in the end those rights and liberties are decided by federal judges, so the makeup of the federal judiciary is connected to everything else we do," Klain said.
White House lawyer Paige Herwig says the effort is a "sea change" designed to make the courts look like the rest of America.
Is there still more work to be done? 100%! Lots more work. But Biden did more than many people guessed could be done. He deserves a lot of credit. AND he deserves to be re-elected.
