I read recently about the idea that “corporations” have become a new species of life, in competition with “homo sapiens.”
In the last few days, I’ve received increasingly panicked emails from Amanda McKay about meeting February budget requirements. First it was $80k, then $50k, then an hour ago it was $39,644. I’m a regular donor at $20/month, but have kicked in $25 or more one-time donations in the last couple of weeks.
Are we users satisfied with the transparency of this operation? Seems to me we should expect a bit more than we are getting. What is the budget? Income and expenses? Staff and salaries??
I mention cooperative enterprises because I just joined my town’s food coop, and got a full explanation of how it works. For $25 you become an “owner.” Then you get 15% off marked items, and quarterly discount of 10% on full-cart shopping trips, that is, four times a year.
Maybe someone can point to the source of my first paragraph, which I can’t find. It suggested that corporations are a new life form, and converting existing corporations to non-profit entities would be a step in the right direction. Some non-human features of corporations:
- gestation/reproduction — immediate, no 9-month wait
- maturity in short order — no waiting to age of majority
- immortality — unlimited life span
- no nutritional requirements, etc.

I’ve been with Daily Kos since early aughts. There are folks that come and go. To recruit and to retain, there must be enough transparency, relevance, tolerance and more.
C’mon, Amanda and other PTB*, push back at me!!
