You know, I think we may have missed something about "false equivalency," and that that may be hamstringing our efforts to combat the current evil. I think that in all our evaluations of Trump and of Biden we start out with their similarities. They are both old men. They are both running for the presidency of the United States for their respective parties. And whatever spectrum we put them on, it's always a spectrum they share. Biden is on one end; Trump is on the other. Doesn't matter which spectrum we use: moral, political, intellectual, physical. Whatever. It's always a spectrum. It's always one guy at one end and one guy at the other. And I don't think that that captures the situation at all accurately.
We are faced, I am sure, with trying to compare things that cannot be compared, because they are in completely different categories. It's like trying to compare a water strider with Cartesian dualism. It simply does not work. In no possible universe could you put those two onto one spectrum. Nor would you. But I don't see anyone applying this and approaching the situation in this light.
Waterstrider and Cartesian dualism. Nope. Does not work. I haven't seen anyone come even close to looking at what we are faced with with this in mind. Always a spectrum. Always one person on one end, one person on the other.
I haven't developed this observation into a solution. Maybe you already have. Maybe you've seen someone who thinks that there really is a category error going on here. If you have, let me know. I've seen nothing. And I think we will misstep and keep on misstepping if we keep comparing water striders with Cartesian dualism.
I don't want us to lose. Sure, according to my hospice nurse, I have less than a year to be alive. I'll be out of it, regardless. But I have three grown sons, whom I adore. And I pretty much do love all people. So yeah. I do what I can.
