"Where Will My Donations Do the Most Good?" Think Local First!

We need to elect Democratic candidates at every level of the government. For that to happen, we need to think as local as possible.

A question that sometimes comes up is “where will my donations do the most good?”.

It’s a fair question, especially since most people have a limited budget to donate, if they do it at all. Many small dollar donors think top down — that is, they donate to the exact places that least need the donations and neglect the people who need it the most. They choose to donate to President Biden and neglect to donate to their local candidate.

I’m telling you to think the opposite way — figure out which local races in your state or county need the donations and start there first. Those campaigns often run on shoestring budgets and really need the $5 or $10 that you can provide. Joe Biden does not need your $5 or $10. Your local state representative might.

Here is an example using my donation patterns.

I give $10 to Alyshia Dyer, a local candidate running for Washtenaw County sheriff, every month. She is running as a progressive, and I was impressed when I met her. That $10 is more meaningful to her campaign (which may raise tens of thousands) than it would be for Joe Biden (who will raise hundreds of millions).

I also give $10 a month to Harry Dunn, a candidate running for Maryland’s 3rd district. Now he’s raised over $2M dollars already, so my donation isn’t as impactful as it is for Dyer above. However, he still will need to raise money for a very expensive primary election. My donation still has meaning, just not as much.

I give to a lot of Senate candidates ranging from Rep. Andy Kim (a fan favorite) to Rep. Ruben Gallego. Most of the Senate candidates honestly do NOT need my money. I say most, because some of them are running in states where they need a LOT of cash. Texas and Florida come to mind. For me, I prioritize the Senate because I have limited means and this narrows down the candidates I have to donate to.

I do NOT donate to President Joe Biden. He doesn’t need my money, as he is already raising record breaking hauls without my piddling $10 every month. 

Now, the Good News Roundup Team doesn’t delve into state legislature or local races. That means the most impactful donations aren’t donated to our funds.

Luckily, there *IS* someone at Daily Kos who fundraises even at the state legislative level! His name is Brainwrap, and he has a site which is a one stop shop for donating to candidates at a local level in your state. Go to the site below to donate to local candidates in your state!

Now, out of the fundraisers that the Good News Roundup Team *does* promote, you should work backwards on this list. The last fundraiser on the page has the most need, followed by the 5th one, etc. So your priorities (if you are looking for the most impactful donation) are as follows:

4. Save the Majority
5. 24 in 24
6. Save Our Senate
7. Joe Biden
