A parade of Republican officials has marched to the courthouse in Manhattan to serve as emotional-support monkeys for the oft-indicted accused felon their party is about to nominate for President, dutifully going before the cameras to regurgitate the talking points accusing the judge of bias based on the actions of someone else. “Even the judge’s own daughter…” each of them monotonously starts out, working up faux outrage at the political involvement of a family member. They’re referring to the fact that Justice Merchan’s daughter has worked for a consulting firm that has had Democratic clients. Senators Rick Scott and J.D. Vance have mouthed the script recently, and today it was Speaker Mike Johnson and Rep. Byron Donalds claiming, in horror, that she had (gasp!) “raised money for Democrats!”
Here’s a question each one of them should be asked every time they declare that this is incontrovertible evidence of unacceptable bias: Obviously, given the activism of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s wife Ginni in Republican politics for many years, for which she has been paid quite handsomely, and especially her deep involvement in the conspiracy to overturn the last election, you must feel strongly that Justice Thomas is hopelessly biased in any case involving President Biden or his administration or former President Trump or the January 6 insurrection, including Trump’s immunity claim and his stolen classified documents case, and any appeals by the insurrectionists. Not to mention, of course, any cases involving one of his many ultra-wealthy benefactors who bankroll his lavish vacations, yacht cruises, fancy motorhomes, etc. And since he hasn’t recused himself in any of these many cases, do you advocate the immediate impeachment of the deeply-conflicted and corrupt Justice Thomas?
What a joke this current Republican party has become...
