Not too long ago, what occurred yesterday at Donald Trump’s Election Interference Trial would have been unthinkable.
It’s hard to imagine Speakers Tip O’Neill or Nancy Pelosi stoop this low and pull off such a stunt. Unlike Mike Johnson, they had respect for the rule of law and for political institutions that ensured everyone was treated fairly. Separation of powers is a political concept understood even by many American high school students — except perhaps by the official second in line to become President of the United States.
It has been almost a decade since Trump declared his candidacy, and all political norms were shunted aside to accommodate his crassness and vulgarity. The rapidity with which coarseness and low-brow behavior entered our political discourse would have surprised all of his predecessors in the White House, going back well over two hundred years ago to George Washington.
Eliminating this cancer in our society and political discourse will take a lot of effort.
“Speaker Mike Johnson assailed the hush money case against Donald Trump Tuesday as an illegitimate ‘sham,’ becoming the highest-ranking Republican to show up at court, embrace the former president’s claims of political persecution and attack the U.S. system of justice,” the AP reports.
“It was a remarkable moment in modern American politics: The House speaker amplifying Trump’s defense and turning the Republican Party against the federal and state legal systems that are foundational to the U.S. government and a cornerstone of democracy.”
“Johnson, who is second in line for the presidency, called the court system ‘corrupt.’”
As Trump sits every day in a New York City courtroom listening to the lurid details of his liaison with a former porn star and eventual cover-up of illegal payments to Stormy Daniels — with his future in the hands of a jury of his peers — Republican lawmakers in Washington, DC are recommending that Trump be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal!
For what, one might ask.
