Recently, I read an earth shattering (to me) book called, Night Train To Nashville by Paula Blackman. It’s about her Grandfather, Gab Blackman, an advertising executive in Nashville, TN who, noticing the Black community didn’t listen to local radio stations in the 1940’s-50’s, began telling his DJ’s at WLAC to play “race records” at night. He did this in order to sell products to the Black community. Arguably, this is what began the popularity of Black music, driving white teens to buy up records, thus beginning the integration of society. I’ll be going into further detail about the book next week in WYFP? at 5pm PT.
