Wow, two in a row. I wake up to another story on the rec list. Thanks everyone.
I was reminded in the comments of the recent shift in headlines on the front page of the Washington Post. These are just from the last 3 days.
A ‘very innocent man’ stares down being convicted and becoming a felon
In the pandemic, we were told to keep 6 feet apart. There’s no science to support that.
‘I took an oath to do no harm’: The two doctors wrestling over Fauci’s legacy
Notice the subtle clear conservative reinforcing intention of every single one of these headlines. For instance, the first leads with a false premise to deflate the power of the actual content.
It places a focus on innocence, with no evidence supporting it, while simultaneously platforming GOP messaging. There is nothing wrong with including the quote, but when you headline it, you are making an opinion judgement that Trump’s innocence claim is the primary point readers need to be informed of. There is no journalism standard that would make that a reasonable assertion.
That’s what we are in for as people interested in maintaining our democracy as we know it. The time for excuse making has ended and the time for strategic plans to counter a soon to be one sided traditional media environment has begun. It’s not impossible, but the first step has to be accepting the playing field has changed, from the Post to the Times to Twitter.
