There were two states that derailed our shot at a majority in 2022 — New York and California. We lost quite a few seats in New York, and left so many seats that Biden won on the table in California. Through a strong showing in both states, we can recapture the House of Representatives!
The New York primary was last night, and it provided us with strong challengers in all of the districts Biden won in the state, along with the one reach seat that is still competitive. We also have to defend one seat that Biden won narrowly, but that should be an easier task than flipping seats.
Before we look at each challenger, here are some fundraising efforts that will ensure that our New York challengers are fully funded. These are better than donating to each one — especially since the fundraisers below DO NOT SEND YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION OUT. That’s right, no spammy e-mails and texts!

Let's take back the House by targeting the 16 districts that Biden won in 2020 that have R reps! That brings us to the Beatable16 Fund! Please donate and then share a link to this site on your social media! #Beatable16

Without further ado, below the fold are the challengers for each of the many New York districts that are competitive!
NY-01: John Avlon
Our first challenger has a tough task ahead of him in a Long Island district Trump narrowly won. Progressives aren’t going to like John Avlon because he is a co-founder of No Labels and is avowedly centrist in outlook. However, he has the persona, connections, and ideology to give Rep. Nick LaLota a real problem. If it is a choice between a No Labels founder and a far-right Trump supporter, give me the former every time.
NY-04: Laura Gillen
Our next challenger has an easier task ahead of her because she is trying to win back the seat Biden won the most that is filled by a Republican. Rep. Anthony D’Esposito is on borrowed time, because Laura Gillen is taking the race very seriously this time around. A Presidential electorate also gives her a much greater chance of winning then the one that rejected her in 2022.
NY-17: Mondaire Jones
Next on the list is former Rep. Mondaire Jones. He was a progressive (almost Squad-adjacent) during his first tenure in Congress, but this time around he is shedding that to win as a more moderate option. He is challenging “moderate” Republican Rep. Mike Lawler is a swing seat we need to win in order to take back the House. Can Jones successfully reinvent himself and get back to Congress?
NY-18: Rep. Pat Ryan
Our only survivor in a swing seat in 2022 was Rep. Pat Ryan. He first came to Congress on the heels of a 2022 special election where he beat his future colleague Rep. Marc Molinaro. He faces a strong challenger in Alison Esposito, as she was part of a nearly-winning ticket for governor in 2022. Ryan may be more moderate than progressive, but we need incumbents like him if we are to hold the House.
NY-19: Josh Riley
The only contender who honestly did better than expected in 2022 was our candidate for NY-19, Josh Riley. He held Rep. Marc Molinaro to a 51-49 result even as the GOP was cleaning up for the governor race here. He’s back for round two and will give another strong challenge even as the 19th district got redder when New York redrew the maps. This is a seat Biden barely won, so Riley will have to work hard to flip it!
NY-22: John Mannion
John Mannion is our last notable challenger. He is our nominee to take on Rep. Brandon Williams in the Syracuse area of Upstate New York. Mannion is used to winning close races as he won his latest race by a mere 10 votes! This district was made bluer after New York redrew the maps, meaning we have a very good chance of flipping this seat. Let’s hope a late-breaking controversy doesn’t sink his campaign!
Those are the serious challengers for our New York districts, plus one endangered incumbent. If we win these seats, we are already very close to winning back the House of Representatives! May our nominees have luck in doing that!
