Judge Merchan will be sentencing TFG on July 11th. A sentence of incarceration, no matter the length, would go a long way in defining the serious of the criminality undertaken on an ongoing basis, and likely to be perpetuated in the future due to various reasons (see Supreme Court ruling), by this career criminal.
I continue to read various assertions on DK and elsewhere that he is unlikely to get a severe sentence “since TFG has no prior criminal record” and “nobody else who has been convicted of a similar crime has been incarcerated.” Yes, our justice system is so perfect it always makes perfect sense based on things like “50 years of precedent overturned overnight” and “the President has now been declared a King” or “because of the color of your skin you get a longer sentence.”
Judge Merchan has every right to make good law based on the circumstances we are in due to the general malaise created by TFG and SCOTUS. Like all Judges, Judge Merchan also has the power to make “unusual law” if you want to call it that, though I don’t see it. Speculate on three years of incarceration going to appeal and being diminished “unusually” to one and a half years. Then scuttled by the Supreme Court which itself needs to be scuttled. Justice will have been served. Why should Judge Merchan stand on ceremony, given the high stakes?
He has every reason to issue a harsh sentence. He is dealing with a man who stole money from people seeking a college degree, grifted from his charity foundation, defamed a woman whom he raped, instigated threats against poll workers and sundry others, was found liable for various issues of major fraud, and most recently found guilty of 34 counts of criminality. And he did that showing total contempt of the law, no remorse and by jeopardizing the lives of people involved. He is also responsible for all those hurt, injured, and killed on Jan. 6th. (There is so much more, it is depressing to consider it all.)
TFG has major upcoming criminal cases and a multitude of counts for various criminal activities linked to Jan. 6th. He will continue being a danger to society for as long as he lives if he is not brought to the curb.
What is justice in this case? Isn’t TFG the most dangerous man in America? Is Judge Merchan supposed to ignore that out of deference to rules of law which are being ignored all over the place and always have been? If circumstances give you one time to step up, isn’t this it?
