Wow, all that supposed national unity lasted for all of about 2 minutes.
I was just forced to watch Fox News for the last 2 and 1/2 hours at a laundromat. I don’t have a washer and dryer at home currently. I would have turned off the TV or changed the channel if I could have. I kept my mouth shut and acted as polite and neutral as I could.
It was definitely eye opening for me to see how much they are trying their best to spin this into Trump’s favor and against Biden and the Democrats. I don’t even know where to begin!
Trump is now officially a hero, and practically a martyr. He is God’s chosen president for God’s chosen country. He can do no wrong and seemingly nothing can displace him from this hero God-like status. Him putting his fist in the air after he was shot at was nothing but a sign of bravery and strength and honor. I guess I should have expected it.
One the other hand, President Biden’s speech at the Oval Office was only “okay.” The calls for “unity” were good on the surface, but somehow were not completely sincere. He is still recovering from a bad debate and concerns about his age and blah blah blah. His policies are bad, bad, bad — and “scary.”
He is somehow a failure as a president. They did not elaborate on any specifics beyond that. I’d like see how they try to explain why his policies are so bad! Or maybe I don’t.
No mention of Project 2025, of course.
They want us to stop saying how Trump is a threat to democracy or a dictator-in-waiting in the name of “unity.” They want us to stop using the Hitler comparisons. They want us to suddenly stop talking about January 6th. They are equating this with incitements to violence against Trump from the left. The shooter may have been registered as a Republican, but he also donated $15 to ActBlue on Biden’s Inauguration Day, so he must have been some sort of fanatic, even if his motives are not yet clear.
All the major Republican talking heads on Fox and some GOP elected officials were talking their heads off. They clearly do not want us to trust an independent investigation or the FBI or the Secret Service. Only a Republican can get to the bottom of this!
There was nobody speaking from the other side of the political aisle either, of course. No self-reflection whatsoever about any of Trump’s actions and behaviors over the last 8+ years.
I don’t really know how we make it through all of this, but I know we’ve got lots of work to do. The Republican/Fox misinformation machine is out in full force! This is what we are up against.
I wish it were possible to truly come together as Americans and turn down the political “temperature” a few degrees. I will still try because it feels like the right thing to do and because President Biden asked me to.
Democracy is still very much in danger, and I feel like we should keep saying that, and saying why.
