One hopeful outcome from the frightening attempt on Trump’s life at the rally on Saturday: per this story from the Daily Beast, the small group of House Democrats who have been pushing for President Biden to quit or be ousted as our party’s nominee… has pretty much instantly given up.
Details:
Democrats hoping that President Joe Biden will drop out of the election race fear their chance of replacing him on the ticket is all but gone in the wake of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump over the weekend, according to a report. After two weeks of intense media scrutiny around if and when Biden would drop out following his disastrous presidential debate performance, attention has now shifted to the attack on Trump at his rally in Pennsylvania and the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday.
“I think this is over,” one Democratic aide told Politico, arguing that the news storm weakening Biden had now passed. Axios separately reported that Democrat lawmakers’ immediate focus had moved to their personal security and the safety of their staffers rather than the party’s political crisis. “We’re all just focused on expressing condolences ... and keeping our teams safe,” one House Democrat, described as having been “fiercely critical of Biden,” told the outlet.
More from Politico:
Not a single Democrat has joined the effort calling for Biden to step aside since Saturday’s horrific events. And given the hard sharp turn toward unity and security, few expect those numbers to grow in the coming days — especially with the press focused on the shooting and the Republican convention, rather than Biden.
Granted, Politico goes on to say that the “Biden Must Go” chorus might return and get loud again in the wake of post-GOP-convention polling that looks worse for Biden and better for Trump. But for now, they’ve folded.
And for the DailyBeast to be reporting this, that says something. The Daily Beast has been one of the most vociferous “Biden Must Go” online news sources.
I hope and pray this remains the case, and we can unite behind our nominee, President Joe Biden. Kos said a few weeks ago that Biden had to fix the trouble himself, post debate, and in my estimation President Biden has done a superb job at demonstrating his ability to campaign full throttle and to stand for reelection as our incumbent President of the United States of America.
