Hi Everyone!
Today is the first day of our Boosting Kamala Harris series!
We are so excited to be here!
On Day One we want to emphasize Vice President Kamala Harris’s dedication to reproductive freedom, as detailed by WMC’s Debbie Hines:
Throughout her political career, Vice President Harris has been known for her passion for reproductive rights. She went into high gear when Texas passed a six-week abortion ban in September 2021 — and her work continued through the Supreme Court’s decision that overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022 and during the midterms to rally support. Harris began a national tour after the overturning of Roe, to speak in support of reproductive rights and against the draconian Supreme Court decision. [During the first 6 months after Roe was overturned,] she traveled to over 15 states in support of women’s reproductive rights, speaking with national civil rights and reproductive rights groups, local elected officials, faith leaders, physicians, and legal scholars to mobilize the base. She met with abortion providers and patients at the White House and used her star power as vice president to host more than 35 official administration events to make sure that reproductive rights maintained visibility and remained a priority.
19th News pointed out yesterday that Vice President Kamala Harris is the administration’s leading voice on the importance of abortion rights. By the time Roe v. Wade was reversed:
Harris had already become the administration’s leading voice on the importance of abortion rights, one of the Democratic Party’s top issues, at the federal and state level. She has spent the last year using rallies and interviews to make a clear-eyed case to voters on how a second Donald Trump presidency and Republican majorities in Congress could restrict abortion access.
Here are her own words:
Remarks by Vice President Harris on the Fight for Reproductive Freedoms.
So, listen, I think we all know this is a fight for freedom. This is a fight for freedom — the fundamental freedom to make decisions about one’s own body and not have their government tell them what they’re supposed to do.
And as we know, almost two years ago, the highest court in our land — the court of Thurgood and RBG — took a constitutional right that had been recognized from the people of America, from the women of America. And now, in states across our nation, extremists have proposed and passed laws that criminalize doctors, punish women; laws that threaten doctors and nurses with prison time, even for life, simply for providing reproductive care; laws that make no exception for rape or incest, even reviving laws from the 1800s.
Now, on that topic, as many of you know, I started my career as a prosecutor specializing in crimes against women and children. What many of you may not know is why.
When I was in high school, I learned that my best friend was being molested by her stepfather. And I said to her, “Well, you’ve got to come and live with us.” I called my mother, and my mother said, “Of course, she does.” And so, she did.
So, the idea that someone who survives a crime of violence to their body, a violation of their body would not have the authority to make a decision about what happens to their body next, that’s immoral. That’s immoral.
And one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government should not be telling her what to do.
Now, I’m proud to be the first president or vice president in history to visit a reproductive health clinic.
Do we trust women? (Applause.)
Do we believe in reproductive freedom? (Applause.)
Do we believe in the promise of America? (Applause.)
Are we ready to fight for it? (Applause.)
And when we fight, we win.
We are all in for Kamala and we want to win!
What can you do to help?
Your donation will come bundled with others from our Good News community and will show Harris that there are many of us who support her and combine hard work with optimism in our battles for a better America!
Until the convention, this donation will go to the eventual nominee fund. Its the best way to donate to her right now.
