Shoutout again to the great folks at Heartland Signal:
Ohio Republican Senate candidate Bernie Moreno muddied his stance on abortion again in a statement to the New York Post, suggesting that abortion could be regulated at the federal level in a way similar to alcohol.
“The word ban is an invention of the Democrats in the media,” Moreno said at last week’s Republican National Convention while suggesting the procedure could see a similar federal regulation framework to those of alcohol regulations.
“Is it restricted? Ok. So can we use that same kind of framework to say that after 15 weeks, there’s some common-sense restrictions.”
While each state has varying laws for the sale and use of liquor, the only federal regulation is that individuals must be 21 years old to purchase and possess alcohol in the United States, in accordance with the National Minimum Drinking Age Act. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law in 1984, but it is unclear how Moreno sees a connection between this law and regulating abortion federally. Moreno’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment on his words by the time of publication.
Again, here’s a reminder on where he stands on the issue:
The GOP has been sending Trump’s running mate, U.S. Senator J.D. Vance (R. OH), to Ohio to try and save Moreno’s campaign. Makes sense because both these assholes have a lot in common. Like this:
In February 2016, Vance sent a text message to a former Yale Law School classmate in which he made an even starker comparison about Trump.
Vance said he’d been going “back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical asshole like Nixon who wouldn’t be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he’s America’s Hitler.”
But on Moreno’s Twitter account in 2016, Moreno himself comparing Trump to Hitler. In a now deleted post, the future Senate candidate retweeted a poll featuring Trump and Hitler, and he appended a comment.
“He attacked immigrants, tries to silence the press, & appeals to the darkest part of human nature,” it said.
Moreno didn’t say to which man he was referring. But his use of the present tense is telling, given the fact that Hitler was 70 years dead at that point.
FYI:
Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown is backing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee.
Brown, who is facing a tough reelection bid against Republican Bernie Moreno, recently called on President Joe Biden to end his political campaign. Two days later, Biden announced he would not run for reelection and endorsed Harris as his replacement.
Biden's decision frees up Democratic delegates to vote for whomever they want at the Democratic National Convention next month, but top Democrats and donors were already throwing support behind Harris on Sunday.

Residents in Wood County might see a familiar but unexpected face on television this election cycle in a campaign advertisement endorsing U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) for re-election.
“I’m a Republican. Have been my whole life,” Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn says in the ad. “I don’t agree with Sherrod Brown on everything, but when it comes to fighting fentanyl, no one has done more than Sherrod Brown.”
The sheriff has never publicly endorsed Mr. Brown before, and in the past, has voted for his Republican opponents. However, Mr. Wasylyshyn said he started working with the senator about four years ago in his role with the National Sheriff’s Association as their borders director.
