On Sunday, more than 44,000 Black women took part in a four-hour Zoom call to support Kamala Harris, raising $1.4 million for her presidential campaign.
That inspired gun violence prevention activist Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, to issue an appeal to white women to show their support for Harris two days ago.
On her Substack, Watts wrote that Black women have been “the backbone of the Democratic Party,” with over 90 percent of Black women voters supporting Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden.
Watts said that white women make up approximately 39 percent of the electorate, But in 2020, 55 percent of white women voted for Donald Trump, compared to 44 percent for Biden, even though it was “against their best interests.”
So here’s what happened Thursday night with “White Women Answer the Call” for Kamala Harris. Watts said the event not only broke the record for the largest call in the history of Zoom with 164,000 participants, but it also raised more than $2 million for the campaign and signed up thousands of volunteers..
Watts put up this post shortly after the call began
As the number of people joining the call kept growing, it caused significant technical glitches. But it was also possible to watch the livestream on YouTube. Among those participating in the call were actress Katie McGrath and pop singer Pink, who was on tour in Sweden.
