Joe Biden spent this Sunday like he spends every Sunday, in church — while the evangelicals’ guy was sinning somewhere. (Where has Trump been hiding?)
This weekend, Biden attended services at the Mount Airy Church of God In Christ. Senior Pastor Bishop Dr. J. Louis Fenton officiated. In doing so, this man of God showed Democratic politicians, marketers, and PR people how to sell Biden to an electorate which polls suggest remains largely ignorant of the existential threat of the other guy.
Fenton started with a simple declaration. (For the video, CLICK HERE)
“We love you, President Biden.”
Then, after he asked the congregation to pray for Biden as the President worked for peace in the Middle East, Fenton dropped the hammer. He roasted Trump for his shameless shilling of a $60 Bible perverted by commercialized patriotism and cynical politics. And, by implication, ripped so-called Christians for backing a huckster over a believer.
“We need to be here because the Bible says pray for them that are in authority. This president doesn’t sell Bibles. He actually reads the Bible!”
Fenton then called out the bullshit claim that conservatives are the party of law and order.
”And that is why I need to submit to you today that we must challenge the so-called notion that there are individuals on the conservative wing of the political spectrum who are right!
We need to change that, because you can’t be right and kill police officers on January 6th! You are not right. You are dead wrong!”
In doing so, Fenton shredded yet another right-wing lie – that Black Americans are anti-police. Note: To demand that the authorities criminally charge bad cops for committing crimes is about as pro-law and order as you can get.
Fenton continued by calling “our president“ a man of “love and compassion.” The contrast with Trump was unstated - but obvious.
He went on to demolish Republican talking points - without ever mentioning the GOP. He pointed out that while COVID-19 was a devastating disease that killed over 1 million Americans, it would have been far worse if not for Biden’s hard work in minimizing the pandemic’s death toll (vaccinations, masks, safe distancing). Left unsaid was the scope of the tragedy had America followed Republican COVID policies.
Next, Fenton pointed out that Biden had been great for the economy.
“Don’t get amnesia and forget that it is this man who took an economy that was on the ropes and brought us back to prosperity.”
He added that God had blessed America, and in return America had responsibilities. While he condemned Hamas for the murder, rape, and hostage-taking of Israelis, he said America also needed to aid displaced Palestinians and support Ukrainians “who have been invaded by an insensitive power, Putin’s Russia.”
Fenton implicitly slammed the MAGA isolationists. He pointed out that America was only great when it shouldered its global responsibilities.
Fenton continued by swatting away another Trump lie - that Biden never held poor performers to account - by pointing out that Joe had ‘fired’ Trump in the last election.
“Our president is a man of vision and integrity. And so, since our president is right. Let us correct the notion that a few days ago, during a debate, he was accused of never having fired anybody. He fired the one who accused him of never firing anybody!
Fenton then dismissed Trump’s ‘big lie’ with an undeniable truth.
Let the record show the election of 2020 was not stolen! It was a fair, free, fraud-less election!”
For if the election had been stolen, as court cases were presented before Republican judges, even to the Supreme Court, then certainly the outcome would have been different.
But every court said that there was no significant fraud in the election.”
The good Pastor pointed out another indisputable fact. One man did attempt to rig the 2020 election.
What did happen was a call made to Atlanta, Georgia, to “find me 11,000 votes.”
Fenton continued by slamming those who would criticize Biden’s delivery, while they simultaneously give Trump absolution for his content.
”Let’s understand something. I don’t know why it is that you want to make an issue of the president and his condition with stammering and not being able at certain times to bring forth words, while another person lies fluently and you never challenged his lies!”
He slammed the debate moderators.
There were news anchors there who who heard his opponent say Charlottesville never happened. It did happen.
He said January 6 never happened. We saw it happen. We saw police officers assaulted.
Fenton finished by again demolishing the GOP’s false claims of being pro-police and pro-America.
You are not the party of law. We are right. We are the party of law. We are the party of respect. We are the party of reconciliation. We have the big tent. We have love for America.
That’s a good blueprint. And there’s plenty more Democratic leadership could and should add. Biden is a good man and a great president. Trump is a monumental shit and disastrously incompetent. If the Democrats cannot figure out how to win a race with these two contestants, they need to be another line of work.
