Over the past two weeks, I’ve been concerned about Joe Biden’s fitness for the presidency. I still fear that there’s a not-insignificant chance based on his recent appearances that he may not stay mentally fit and/or physically capable of the rigor that doing the job of the presidency requires to do correctly (assuming you don’t spend all of your time at one of your golf courses, anyway).
However, at the end of the day, the decision had to be Biden’s to make. Stepping down voluntarily would be the only way not to cause irreparable damage to the Democratic party in this election. The rift between those that backed Biden and those that wanted him out would likely make the Bernie/Hillary conflict look like a pillow fight.
And it sounds like Biden has made his decision — he’s staying in the race. Because of that decision, I’ve made a decision as well, as I urge every other Democrat to do.
My decision is that the time for questioning whether Biden should stay in the race and who should replace him is over. He’s made his decision, and nothing is likely to change that, so any further discussion of him not being the candidate is not only fruitless, but increasingly harmful as time passes.
So, from this point, my support for Joe Biden is back to 100%. Whether I think he’s the best candidate or not, whether I think he’ll remain capable for the next 4 years, or any other concerns I have, they all now appear irrelevant. My only goal now is giving 100% to supporting Biden in this election and preventing Donald Trump from regaining the presidency.
And I encourage all other Democrats to make the same decision. The risk of failure is too great.
