Here’s the latest news today out of Ohio courtesy of Rasmussen Reports latest poll:
Ohio Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown is leading Republican challenger Bernie Moreno in November according to a new survey from the conservative leaning Rasmussen Reports.
The poll of 1,267 likely voters in Ohio, conducted from August 13 to August 17, shows Brown with a 5-point lead with 47 percent of the vote against Moreno's 42 percent.
Democrats currently enjoy a thin Senate majority with 51 Senators caucusing with the party, including several who are formally independents, while 49 do the same for the GOP. Republicans are hoping to flip the Senate in November and are widely expected to capture the West Virginia seat being vacated by independent Senator Joe Manchin, a former Democrat who has continued to caucus with the party.
Rasmussen Reports is known for working closely with various conservative organizations and earlier this year was removed from the list of pollsters included on the FiveThirtyEight aggregation website, according to The Washington Post.
That’s pretty consistent we’ve seen with past polling. But friendly reminder, Moreno is a pretty lousy candidate:
Ohio Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bernie Moreno is in a difficult position when it comes to abortion, and he appears to be trying to hedge.
To win a close race against Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, he needs an important part of the Republican coalition — abortion opponents— to show up to the polls.
But while Ohioans have mostly elected Republicans in recent decades, most voters clearly disagree with abortion foes. A sweeping abortion-rights measure sailed through last November by a 14-point margin.
That leaves Moreno, a Cleveland businessman, the choice of alienating a key part of his coalition or a huge swath of voters in the middle. These days, he seems to be using semantics to avoid stating his position on that pivotal issue. That’s after he criticized others for waffling.
