Thinking Big
David Fitzsimmons is the former editorial cartoonist for the Arizona Star.
The Harris - Walz Campaign is thinking big and casting a wide net, not giving up on any segment of the electorate or any demographic group.
If they can achieve this ambitious goal, this will be an election to remember.
All in the Family
Jonathan Last: “Last night the Democratic party served notice that it is not satisfied with its coalition of African Americans, Hispanics, progressives, urbanites, suburbanites, union workers, and educated professionals.”
“Democrats are making a play for rural white voters, too.”
“It was an extraordinary piece of programming aimed at the heart of the Republican coalition and it suggests that Kamala Harris is not trying to win a narrow, blue-wall victory. She’s making a play for a realigning election.”
For the speech by the second gentleman, however, the signs simply read DOUG.
That reflects Doug Emhoff’s public persona, as a sort of Ringo-esque goofball who merits first-name terms—he just seems like a Doug, with its overtones of solid Gen X dependability.
The familiarity also gestured to Emhoff’s potential to be a quietly transformative figure in American politics: Female ambition is now the stuff of a million power breakfasts and lapel badges, but if Kamala Harris becomes America’s first female president, her husband will break the real “hardest glass ceiling” in American politics. Behold, a man who is content to be the supporting actor in someone else’s drama.
